尾崎 翠
1896年、鳥取に生まれる。女学校時代から、「文章世界」へ投稿を始める。故郷で代用教員となった後、上京。日本女子大に入学。在学中、「無風帯から」を発表し、大学にとがめられ、中退。文学に専念し、「アップルパイの午後」「第七官界彷徨」で一部から注目される。1932年、病のため帰郷、音信を断つ。戦後は行商などをしていた。「第七官界彷徨」が再発見された後も執筆を固辞。1971年、老人ホームにて死去

一読してとにかく驚いた。話には聞いていたが、凄い作家が居たものだ。安部公房に極めて近い匂いを私はこの作家に感じているが、この作品は1931年のものなのだ。一種異様な閉鎖的な場所で、小さな世界にひどく深く沈みこんでゆく様子は、寧ろ埴谷雄高に一層近いかもしれない。
思えば彼女は、カフカとほぼ同時代の人間なのだ。しかしつくづく、彼女の活動期が極めて短いことが惜しまれる。ここから花開くべき文学の宇宙もあったろうに、それは「何か」によって未然に立ち消えてしまったのだ。

今、彼女の作品に触れることのできた、その幸福なめぐり合わせに感謝する。

ある偶然のきっかけから尾崎翠さんの存在を知りました。今ではそのきっかけをくれた神様に感謝している次第です。本書に収録されている短篇の発表された年を後から確かめるとぶっ飛ぶのですが、古臭さや色褪せた感じは微塵もなし。逆に先鋭的であり、前衛的であり、「どうしたらこんな設定を思いついて、しかもそんな話が書けちゃうの？」というナニモノも超越した凄味をひしひしと感じるのです。戦後、尾崎さんの作品が「再発見」されて執筆の依頼が殺到したそうですが、それを拒否してしまう。惜しいことをしたと思うが、だからこそ、彼女の作品群がより特異な輝きを帯びつづけることになるのかも知れません。本書で残念だったのは、もう少し読み仮名を増やして欲しかったこと。浅学な私には読めない字句が山積してしまう有様。

たまたま「こほろぎ嬢」の劇場招待券が当たり、下北沢の映画館まで足を運んで映画を見たのがきっかけでした。
その何ともいえぬ世界観に嵌ってしまい、早速、本屋に足を運びこの本を手に入れました。
「第七官界彷徨」「歩行」「こおろぎ嬢」「地下室アントンの一夜」のこの第一部に収められた４作品で圧倒されました。昭和初期の作品とは思えない瑞々しさを感じました。
そこに書かれている初恋や失恋は、決してせつなさを感じさせない、どこか突き抜けてしまっている明るさを感じます。
病で筆を折ってから再評価され、「第七官界彷徨」が「黒いユーモア」というアンソロジーに所収されたそうですが、確かに、そこには現代でも十分通用するユーモアのセンスが光っています。
理知的に、言葉に拘った作品は、そうしたユーモアのセンスに彩られて、素晴らしい輝きを放っているように思います。
続けて、下巻も一気に読みたくなりました。
