内田 百〓
1889‐1971。小説家、随筆家。岡山市の造り酒屋の一人息子として生れる。東大独文科在学中に夏目漱石門下となる。陸軍士官学校、海軍機関学校、法政大学などでドイツ語を教えた。1967年、芸術院会員推薦を辞退。本名、内田栄造。別号、百鬼園(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　ちくま文庫から刊行されている百集成の中で、最も完成度の高い最高の一冊を上げろといわれればもしかしたら、その一冊は『サラサーテの盤』と題されるこの一冊なのかもしれない。

　二十三の小品からなり、その一つ一つに百の体験した幻影が描かれている小品集『東京日記』、亡くなった友人の妻が毎日一つずつ、その友人の遺品を百の家から持っていく『サラサーテの盤』、親友宮城道夫の死を描いた『東海道線刈谷駅』など、どれを取っても傑作ぞろい！
　まさに一部の隙も無い百集成究極の一冊！！お勧めです！

　あっ、それから巻末には三島由紀夫による解説も収録されていますので、そちらもお見逃しなく！

鈴木清順監督の名画「ツィゴイネルワイゼン」の原作「サラサーテの盤」を表題作とする短編集。怪談・奇譚・巷談を高度な小説技法で語る作者の持ち味が存分に出ている。

例えば、23の小編から成る「東京物語」は、日常の中で起きる怪異譚を纏めたものだが、その内容はまさに昭和初期の風景や生活を正確無比に記したもので、その中に妖異が潜むのである。風・雷・地震と言った自然現象が多く引用され、それ自身生き物のようである。草木の描写の挟み方も巧み。狐や狸や幽霊も人間と同列に扱われている。そして、妖異と見えたものが実は主人公の幻覚であっても一向に差し支えない。不思議な芸術品である。「柳検校の小閑」は、盲目の琴の老先生の"老いらくの恋"をテーマにしたものだが、これを洗練された心理小説として描いている点に感心した。「南山寿」は老境の閑居と苦渋を映し出した好編。本編だけだは無いのだが、作品中に主人公が苦々しく思う相手が出て来る場合が多い。"ヨーヨーの法則"と呼ぶらしいが、自分が相手を迷惑と考えている場合は、逆も成り立つの意。「サラサーテの盤」では、主人公が迷惑と思う相手は、亡友の妻で、亡友の遺品を取り立てに来る。が、妻からすれば遺品を中々返してくれない主人公を迷惑と思っている筈で、この心理の反転の妙と全体を覆う雰囲気、「サラサーテの盤」に吹き込まれた謎の言葉が読者に深い印象を与える傑作。「とおぼえ」、「ゆうべの雲」、「油比駅」は人間と幽霊の区別が曖昧模糊とした怪談。"コワイのは自分"と言うテーマが怖い。「東海道線刈谷駅」は親友宮城道夫への哀悼の辞。

理知的な計算に基づき、日常生活に潜む幻想や奇譚を正確無比な筆致で描いた傑作短編集。

百けん先生の文章はいつもどこか浮遊している感がある。本書でも東京日記やその他の作品にもそれが顕著に現れる。どこか曖昧でわけのわからない恐怖。先生の作品は下手な怪談より怖いです。
