1889‐1971。小説家、随筆家。岡山市の造り酒屋の一人息子として生れる。東大独文科在学中に夏目漱石門下となる。陸軍士官学校、海軍機関学校、法政大学などでドイツ語を教えた。『冥途』『旅順入城式』『百鬼園随筆』『阿房列車』など著書多数。1967年、芸術院会員推薦を辞退。酒、琴、汽車、猫などを愛した。本名、内田栄造。別号、百鬼園(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　幻想的な雰囲気と、一種独特の浮遊感に満ちた内田百の小説３３篇を集めたのがこの小説集『冥土』です。

　たくさんある小説の中でも、個人的な一番のお勧めは『件（くだん）』でしょうか。数ページのものすごく短い小説なので、あんまり書くとネタばれ（まぁ、ネタといえるものも特に無い小説なのですが）になってしまうのであまりかけませんが、「件」というのは顔が人間で体が牛という妖怪（？）のような化物のことで、主人公があるとき突然気付いたらこの件になっていたというところから始まる話です。ただこれだけ書くと、何となくカフカの『変身』のような雰囲気もありますが内容は全く違います。詳しくは実際に読んでみてください。これまで味わったことの無い奇妙な雰囲気を味わえるはずです。

　『件』のほかにも、表題作になっている『冥土』や、名作の誉れ高い『旅順入城式』など百の小説世界をじっくりと楽しめる一冊、お勧めです！！

　百間の本は昔から読んでいて、ちくまで皆さんにもっと読んでもらえると思って楽しみにしてました。ただ、刊行されると最初は１２巻の予定だったのが売れ出してから２４巻になり、商業主義がイヤダと思いました。それだけならまだしも、最終巻に、「お詫び」として前期と後期に重複させてしまった作品が二つもあることには筑摩書房の編集者たちに怒りさえ感じました。
　刊行する以上はしっかりと全２４巻出すと初めから決めておいて、計画を練ってから刊行するのが編集者の仕事ではないのでしょうか。百間の名文がただの商業上の喰いものにされていることは「謹んでお詫び申しあげ」られても許されることではありません。
　そういった意味で筑摩書房の編集者たちに対して仕事しろ「馬鹿野郎」と苦苦しく思いました。編集者たちは「お詫び」に辞職して貰いたいと思ってます。
