誰がどう見てもしょぼい施設を、けなすでもなく淡々と評価する著者の視点に共感。確かにこれが「今」の日本。日本にすらこんな不可解なものを作ってしまう人がいるのに、ストーンヘンジやナスカの地上絵の制作者のことなど理解できるはずがないということがよくわかる。東日本編もどうぞ。

いわゆるテーマパーク巡りの写真集なのだろうが、奥が深いものがある。私はそう思っている。現代民俗学とでも言ったらいいのだろうか。

神道や仏教などを背景として形成された日本文化が、欧米や他のアジア諸国でも高く評価されている。いわゆるハイカルチャーとしての日本文化である（一方でアニメやヴィデオゲームなども多くの人の支持を集めている。むしろこちらの方が盛んであろう。ただこの場合は技術的な側面が問題となる）。しかし日本文化が取り上げられるのは、日本文化が何れの国にとっても「極めて特異」である限りにおいてである。

この本で紹介されている珍妙な博物館やオブジェもまた、「極めて特異」なものである。しかし上で述べたような、広く認知された日本文化とは別のものではないか、そう考える人もいるかもしれない。だが、やはり同じ精神風土の中で生まれたものなのである。一国のハイカルチャーもサブカルチャーも、その根底で軌を一にしているものがあるのである。物質的な飽和状態と思想的な空疎さが、この作品のなかかせ窺える。

漫然と見ていても楽しいし、自国の文化を考える材料としてもなかなかのものである。生殖器関係のテーマパークと農耕と日本人のつながりなど、いろいろと考えるのも面白い。

東日本編と合わせて買ってしまう西日本編のこの本だが、相変わらずこっちも面白い。知的好奇心をかなり刺激される。
しかし、それぞれの物件は現在のせちがらい世の中ではなかなか上手く流行らない所ばかりで、現在ではやめてしまった所も幾つかあるので、非常に惜しいと思う。
例えば、地方の規模の小さい遊園地などは、最近の少子化などの影響や、首都圏のとある外国資本の大遊園地などの客足を取られてしまって、それこそ「閑古鳥の鳴く」状態になってしまっている。竹下内閣時代の「ふるさと創生１億円」を利用して、バブル景気の時代なので、いわゆる「ハコモノ」に投資してしまった自治体の物件も載っているが、１億円という資本を何とか他の利用方法に利用出来なかったのかと悔やまれるものもあり、実際にはそんな行政の不甲斐無さを感じる事もあるだろうが、この本を読んで感じ方は人それぞれだと思う。
