僕は、温泉が大好きだ。温泉を紹介した本は、いっぱいある。僕は、嵐山の本が一番好きです。
温かい湯は、体を癒してくれる。人生を温めてくれる。嵐山は、人一倍、いろいろな人生を知っている。だから、彼の書く文章は、おもしろく温かい。

川端康成は、越後湯沢で美人の芸者と良い仲になった。それを「雪国」にした。男は温泉に行って、いい女と出会いたい、何とかしたいと夢想する。現実に出会えるのは、元美人だったかもしれない女性たちである。仕方がないので、俳句なんぞ作ってしまう。

この本を読めば、そんな温泉の楽しみが広がる。

川原湯、沢渡、草津、勝浦…といった日本全国の名湯が軽快な文章で紹介されています。豊富なうんちくとアホバカ話が沢山のっています。

この本と温泉で体を温めよう。

嵐山光三郎が実際に温泉に赴き、その趣を活写している。奥湯河原や箱根塔ノ沢温泉では、文人がなぜ温泉にはまったにかを考察し、玉川温泉では両親とともに俳句を作っている。その他、各地の温泉で湯の質や土地の人情について書いている。

本書に記載されている温泉は、おおむね有名な温泉ばかりだが、単なるつまらない温泉案内ではない。話題は四方八方に及び、読者を飽きさせない。自分も温泉に行きたくなる。温泉好きには楽しい本。

　1997年にJTBから出た単行本の文庫化。
　日本各地の温泉を訪ね歩いた紀行文。取り上げられているのは、群馬の川原湯、和歌山の白浜、箱根の塔ノ沢、秋田の玉川、大分の宝泉寺など。
　温泉の話と、旅行記とが上手い具合に融合した良作。さらに、著者の内面世界や記憶もからんできて、読み物としての出来映えも素晴らしい。山口瞳や壇一雄、志賀直哉らの思い出話も。
　しかし、不思議と、書かれている温泉に行ってみたいという気にはならない。どちらかというと読書対象として楽しむべき一冊か。
