　「スコットランド史」を扱った本の中でもかなり読み易い本です。
　個人（歴代のスコットランド王等）や事項ごとに数頁ずつの記述があり、それがまとまって１冊になっている本です。
　原著者も述べていますが、通史的理解のためにはもう１冊、別の本を読むのがベターです。（翻訳者は森護「スコットランド王国史話」を挙げています。）
　本書は副読本的として読むのに最適な本だと思います。英国史やスコットランド史の本を読むときに、「同君連合」や「ジェームズ６世」といったキーワードをこの本で引くとイラスト付なところもあり楽しいと思います。

最初の住民ビーカー族から１７０７年の「売国的」な連合法によるイングランドへの併合を経て１７４５年のカロデンの戦いまでを扱った簡潔なスコットランド通史。

「その国では、つまらない言い争いと激しい内輪もめが延々と続いた。人々は私利私欲を優先し、指導者は生まれなかった」と筆者が嘆くほど 絶えず内乱続きで不安定なスコットランド

繁栄したのはイングランドの属国状態の時だけで、百年戦争、バラ戦争とイングランドが無関心の時には攻め入っては逆にやられてしまう。（１３１４年バノックバーンの戦いでの奇跡的な勝利を除く）　イングランド牽制の為にフランスにはいいように利用され、それが終われば今度は宗教改革の余波で長老派、国教派、カソリックに分かれてまたしても内輪もめ。

そんな悲惨なスコットランド史への筆者の視点にはルサンチマンじみたものはなく、淡々かつ愛に満ち溢れていて気軽に読める入門書です。　この本でスコットランドに
興味が持てたら　「図説スコットランド」（河出書房新社）、ロザリント・ミチスン「スコットランド史　その意義と可能性」も読んでみるといいと思います。
