1932年、東京生まれ。東京大学名誉教授。帝京平成大学教授。『ボードレール全集』で日仏翻訳文学賞、『シャルル・ボードレール―現代性の成立』で和辻哲郎文化賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

音楽的、暗示的、装飾的な描写で想像の世界を描き出したサンボリスト達、その代表はこのボードレールやランボー、マラルメであり、日本においては萩原朔太郎なのであるが、それら象徴派とよばれるものの全てが嫌いだという人もいるかもしれない。それならば頽廃主義、芸術至上主義者ボードレールの詩からではなく、ボードレールその人について述べられた書物から入り、そのあとで「悪の華」等を読むことをおすすめする、その方が詩、そしてボードレールに対する関心の度合が格段に大きくなることは間違いない。

ちなみにベンヤミンはその著作の中で「ボードレールは孤独を愛したが、彼がのぞんだのは群衆の中の孤独だった。」と書き記している。

ボードレールの詩集をやっと読んでみた。それ以前の、詩集とボードレールとは、ある意味で一線を画しているといえる。ゲーテとかバイロンとか、その前の時代まで純粋に詩集と呼ばれているものとは明らかかに違うのだ。この後の、ランボーとかロートレアモンとか、明らかに、ボードレールの延長線上のものを感じるし、それからいうと、19世紀中ごろの世界の変革の中から、生まれるべくして生まれてきた詩人といえる。
そこには、「悪」や「死」という今まで忌避されてきたテーマが扱われていて、しかも「ロマン主義」の終わりといったテーマも出てくる。文明と時代に脅かされていたこの時代に、敏感に、その時代感覚を汲み取り、表現した最初の詩人といえる。
好き嫌いはあるにせよ、時代の必然として生まれてきた彼の詩には、何らかの大きなメッセージを読む者すべての与えざるを得ないと思う。それをどう受け取るかは別として、深く考えさせられる偉大な詩集である、と思う。堀口大學の訳は知らないけれど、これはとても読みやすい訳で最後まで読み通すことが出来た。
