山田 風太郎
大正11(1922)年、兵庫県養父郡関宮町の医家に生れる。昭和24年、「眼中の悪魔」「虚像淫楽」で第二回探偵作家クラブ賞を受賞。その後「甲賀忍法帖」を初めとする“風太郎忍法”を生みだし、忍法ブームをまきおこす。平成13(2001)年死去(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

ふっと影のように、人物の前を横切っていく実在の者たち。
その顔が明らかになった瞬間、事件の真相がベールのようにはぎとられていく過程。何度も何度も背筋がぞっとする大傑作。
山風明治ものにはずれなしだが、そんな中でもこれは最高峰に位置するだろう。
ラストに向けての哀感も見事！

上巻から通しで事件のからくりもさること乍、この下巻は特に人物のひとりひとりが男女問わず恰好いい!(まあまあ‥救いようのないような人もいるけれども)
実在の人物が多く出てくるので、誰がいつどこで死んでしまうかわかっている人などには、その恰好良さが切ないことと思います。
あと通行人のように有名人が出てくるのもニクいトコロ。
「あんたこんなところにいたのか!でも全然注目されてない!(笑)」と。

それからこれは、登場人物について調べたくなるので困ります。
調べなくてもまったく楽しめるけれど、楽しかったからこそ調べたくなってしまう。
とりあえず柴五郎は調べました!
川路大警視は論文を書こうとして断念しました…


あ、私『るろうに剣心』から斎藤一が気になったクチだけど、この斎藤一も大好きです!(笑)

◆「痴女の用心棒」

　　明治４年に、長州出身の参議・広沢真臣が暗殺された際、
　　彼と同衾していた愛人おかねが、四年半に及ぶ留置生活
　　を経て、このたび無罪放免となった。

　　しかし、いまだ暗殺事件の犯人が捕まっていないため、
　　油戸巡査が、おかねの監視をすることになるのだが……。


　　広沢真臣は、長州において木戸孝允とならび称された、維新の俊傑。
　　結末では御隠居が、暗殺事件の真相について驚くべき推理を披露します。



◆「春愁　雁のゆくえ」

　　紙屋巡査は、加治木警部から兵四郎の行状調査を命じられる。

　　しかし、調査の過程で、お千という柳橋の芸者を
　　見初めた彼は、しだいに当初の目的を見失ってしまい……。


　　タイトルに暗示される、ある文豪の少年時代の悲恋が、
　　彼の代表作の結末を先取りするかのように語られます。



◆「天皇お庭番」

　　元江戸城お庭番・針買将馬は、幕末に薩摩へ隠密
　　御用にいった際、拘束され、眼をつぶされてしまう。

　　ひょんなことから、そんな針買の妻の用心棒をすることになった兵四郎。

　　しかしそれは、兵四郎と薩摩お庭方上りの巡査を陥れる、悪辣な罠だった……!!


　　密偵使いの名人と言われた川路大警視が、いかに
　　その能力を磨いてきたかという背景が窺える話です。
