シェイクスピアを一度も読んだことが無い人にはお薦めできません。
現代のＴＶドラマなんかと比べたら、展開が遅いし、台詞がやたら長いからです。
ハムレットを読みたい・読まなきゃいけない気がする、
そんな人には、この松岡和子さんの訳を
是非お薦めします。

「生きてとどまるか、消えてなくなるか、それが問題だ。」

翻訳のすばらしさ（イメージの喚起力・カッコ良さ）にかけては、
おそらく右に出る訳はないと思われます。
なにせ翻訳家のご本人が稽古場へ出向き
演じる役者さんや演出家と台詞について相談し
創り上げた作品だそうですから。

また、
たぶんハムレットの魅力は、「どんな作品か」ではなく、
「どう読んだか」だろうと思います。

キャラクターたちが口走る言葉の中に
自分と共通する「なにか」がひっかかってくるからです。

最近なんか知らないけど
人生のことが気になってしょうがないあなた。
約四百年前から変わらない
人間の根本的な問いに
迷い込んでみてはいかがでしょうか。

ドイツの代表的な演出家のペーター・シュタインは、「ハムレット」を「言葉のうえで最も美しい作品」と語っている。翻訳の「ハムレット」でしか「ハムレット」を知らないぼくにはちょっと分からない感覚だ。

「生か死かそれが問題だ」とか「尼寺へ行け」という有名な台詞は、ぼくにとっては、美しい言葉というより、古い文学として植え付けられている。シェークスピアの訳は学者の解釈によってできあがってきた。それは日本のちょっとした悲劇である。

「ハムレット」は、演劇である。恋愛とか政治劇とかそういうことでなく演劇なのだ。ハムレットがクローディアスを殺せるのに殺さないのはそういうことなのだ。事実のリアリティではなく、演劇のリアリティが優先されている。ハムレットは筋を追ってい??復讐劇でも恋愛劇でもないのだ。

登場人物は、親友のホレイショーを除いて全員死ぬ。そういう悲劇の構造自体が劇なのだ。最近までそんな簡単なことが分からなかった。ペーター・シュタインとピーター・ブルックと、芝居の現場に立ちあい続けた松岡和子訳の「ハムレット」によってそれを知った。遅すぎた！

松岡和子の訳はそうした現代におけるハムレット演劇の傾向をふまえている。そこが最大の魅力だ。

デンマークの王子ハムレットは死んだ父の亡霊から自分は現在国王の座についている弟のクローディアスに殺されたと聞き､クローディアスに対する復讐を決意する。あまりにも有名なこの戯曲ですが、正直僕はよくわかりませんでした。ハムレットの性格はよく優柔不断などといわれますが、いくらなんでもクローディアスを殺す機会がいくらでもありのになんで迷っているんだろう・・という疑問を禁じ得ません。しかしやはりセリフや一つ一つの場面はとてもいいので読む価値は十分あると思います。
