ちくま文庫から、イエイツ編・井村君江編訳の『ケルト妖精物語』『ケルト幻想物語』も出ています。その２冊は、イエイツ以外の人が書いた民話を、イエイツが選択し分類し、まとめたものです。一方、この『ケルトの薄明』は、イエイツ自身が書き記したものです。

３冊ともお勧めですが、イエイツ編の２冊が民話的とすると、イエイツ著の『ケルトの薄明』は神秘的。体験に基づいた言葉が非常に美しく、深みを感じます。
井村君江氏の訳も、こなれていて音楽的で、とても満足のいくものです。
この一冊に惚れまくっています。

　イエイツの『The Celtic Twilights; Myth, Fantasy and Folklore』（1893年）の翻訳。ちなみに全訳である。
　イエイツがみずからの足で民間伝承を集めてまわり、一冊にまとめたのが本書。
　アイルランドの妖精、伝説、迷信、幽霊などの話が収められている。いずれも不思議な物語であり、読んでいるうちに奇妙な気持ちに囚われてくる。現実と幻想の境界が曖昧になってくるような。
　アイルランドの人々は、妖精や幽霊の存在を疑っていないのである。実在する、日常のものとして受け入れ、何食わぬ顔で対応している。そこに魅力があり、引き込まれてしまう。
　イエイツの語り口も上手い。

Ｗ・Ｂ・イエイツと言えば、アイルランドを代表する詩人。世界的にも有名だが日本ではあまり知られていません。映画「メンフィスベル」で主人公が口にしていたので、そういう映画からイエイツの名を知った人も多いでしょう。イエイツ、ランボー、などは映画でよく出てきます。本書は民族学者でもあるイエイツがアイルランド各地の民話を集めた物です。まさしくアイルランドのグリムといえるでしょう。グリムと違う所は詩人であるイエイツによって文体が叙情的に書かれている所でしょうか。でも詩というのは原語が持つ美しさ、原語を理解していて初めてわかる物だと思いますので、私も原語は分かりませんので、本当の良さを理解できないのが残念です。こういう意味では詩というジャンルを日本語に翻訳するのは間違っていると思うのは暴論でしょうかね。
