この本のタイトルは文字通りとれば「人間喜劇」ですが、生きることについて考えさせられる深い作品です。
物語の舞台は「古き良きアメリカ」。カリフォルニアのイサカという街を舞台に、１４才の主人公ホーマー・マコーリーと、幼い弟ユリシーズを中心に、貧しいながらも互いに慈しみ支え合うマコーリー一家、近所の子供達、大人達が、互いに関わり合う中で、いくつものエピソードが語られ、オーケストラの演奏のように物語が重厚に重ねられてゆきます。
子供達が本当に子供らしくて魅力一杯です。元気でやんちゃでちゃっかりしていて、でも真剣で。そして周りの大人達はそんな子供達に対して実に温かく優しい眼差しを向けて見守ります。（杏の実をねらう少年達と、その木の持ち主の老人とのやりとりは、中でも特に素敵な一編です。）
でも遠いところで起こっている「戦争」がこの街にも暗い影を落とします。ホーマーは電報配達のアルバイトを始めますが、時には軍隊に所属する兵士の戦死を伝える電報を配達しなければなりません。現実の中で否応なしに人間として成長せざるをえないホーマーの苦悩は、時代や国の違いを超えて読み手に伝わってきます。
原作者サローヤンはアルメニア系アメリカ人の、短編の名手として知られる作家ですが、この作品は彼の長編の中でも特に有名で評価の高いものです。この日本語訳は、とても忠実に原作の良さを伝えていると思います。
まずは、とにかく読んで見て下さい。「笑い」と「涙」どちらも無しには読めない一冊です。でも読み終わったとき、心の中にあたたかい気持ちとさわやかな読後感が残っているはずです。

岩波で「人間喜劇」と訳されていた覚えがあるが、それよりも原題の「ヒューマン･コメディ」のほうがずっといい。
何しろ、主人公がほとんど定まっていないといっていいような感じなのだ。
登場人物のそれぞれに背負うものがある。それを、イサカという町を舞台に、非常に生き生きと描いている。
