杉浦日向子さんは、‘江戸時代専門’の漫画家かと思っていたが、明治が舞台の作品もあるんだなあ・・。

この本は、明治初期の横浜を舞台とした短編集。来日した外国人や、彼らに関る日本人、新しい生活を夢見て学問に励む書生たち（←彼らのキャラ設定がまた秀逸）、江戸時代を引きずったままの人・・・様々な人が、それまでの士農工商の枠組みの崩壊した新世界で新しい価値観と闘いながら生きている。それはときに楽しく、ときに滑稽なほど物悲しく。

時代は確実に変わっていくのに、エデンの園のように変わらない美徳も秘めた明治維新直後の日本の姿が愛しい。

牛鍋、コーヒー、シェークスピアなどの新しさと、ところどころに混じる武家言葉の古さが混在していることの面白さ、不思議さもあり、明治ならではの‘笑い’が満載である。特にシェークスピア劇のセリフは、原文を知っている現代人だからこそ笑える、ということまで計算されている。私たちは今や、その当時の外国人と同じような気分で江戸という時代を眺めているのかも知れない。どこか遠くの‘楽園’のような国として・・・。

昔とある雑誌で見た短編の漫画が、どの本に収録されているのか分からず、この本に掲載されていることをやっと発見。
この短編集は江戸というより、明治時代のものが中心かと思いますが、独特の杉浦さんの雰囲気が出ていて、面白いです。

私が杉浦さんの本を購入するのに、とりあえず知りたかった情報として…、この本は全て短編読みきりの漫画集です（笑）。
（小説なのか、漫画なのか少々わかりにくいですよね…）

読みやすい漫画とは、正直申し上げにくいですが、レトロな雰囲気、ちょっと不可思議な雰囲気を味わいたい方にはお勧めです。

杉浦日向子は「江戸を描く漫画家」として名高いのだけれど、『東のエデン』は、まさしく江戸の終焉を描いた作品集である。
明治以降を日本の近代とするならば、近代の息苦しさから解き放たれた場所、江戸こそ、(近代以降の日本に住む作者にとっての）日本の「エデン」であり、江戸の終焉は同時に楽園の終焉としてもとらえられる。

西洋文化とのふれあいによる興奮のなかで、「江戸が夢になっちまう」とつぶやく登場人物たちの不安もまた、杉浦日向子は見逃さない。

四民平等、廃仏礼等、新しい日本が作られていくざわめきと興奮の中で、消えていく江戸を静かに見つめる視線がここにある。
