　１に引き続き、他文庫に収録されていない作品の魅力を述べたい。

　まず、特に自意識をもてあます読者に。’過去帳’に分類された「かめれおん日記」を読めば、元気が出て、あるいは更に悩んで突き抜けられる。後に文学史に名を残す文豪でさえ、世に出る前は、表向き淡々と書いていても、内心こんなに鬱屈していたのだ。
　「狼疾記」は「かめれおん日記」と主人公、背景は同じだが、読後感は爽やかだ。皆に馬鹿にされる事務員のＭ氏にも矜持があり、借り物でない哲学がある。それを見出し、尊重する主人公には柔らかな感性がある。主人公が久しぶりの酒で独りくだを巻くところでは、読者の憂さもさっぱり晴れる。「狼疾記」のみなら岩波文庫にもあるが、二作はセット。「かめれおん日記」の孤独と憂愁に会ってこその快感だろう。

　他、どうも怪しいが、どこか愛嬌のある老人との交流を描いて、味のある’南島譚’の「鶏」もはずせない。
　書簡Iは、はじめミステリアスでついそそられ、次いで作家未満の悲しみに打たれ、やがて南洋から家族を気遣い、「土民を愛する」姿にほのぼのとする。
　書簡IIは、幼い息子たちに宛てた南洋からの葉書と手紙と集めたもので、作家没直後から児童書とする企画があったほどである。
　尚、他文庫にも所収の「わが西遊記」が持つ興趣は、私が言うまでもない。

「我が西遊記」が一番読ませる。おなじみ河童の沙悟浄がえらく哲学的なのには笑いを誘うが、彼をしてうんうんと悩み苦しめるのはそのまま中島敦自身が日々感じていた苦しみである。中島文学は、ひとつのテーマを様々のヴァリエーションで現したものであると思われるが、これは軽みやおかしみで仕上げてあり最高の作品のひとつといえよう。

特に印象的だったのは「悟浄歎異」。西遊記を題材にした小説です。沙悟浄が孫悟空や三蔵法師の人物について語るという形式が採られています。何も考えていないようでありながら思索を行動にまで昇華させた悟空と、どこまでも内に内に思索を深めていく三蔵の対比は見事としか言いようがありません。そして、全くの対極にあるふたりが、人生を必然であり自由であると考える、その一点においてのみ一致しているという面白さ。小説というのは人物をここまで表現できるのかと思い知らされるような作品です。
