若くして夭折した中島敦の作品のうち、比較的初期のものが収録されている一冊。
有名な「山月記」や、芥川賞候補にもなった「光と風と夢」など、
そもそもの作品数の少ない中島敦を知るには、この一冊でかなり「知ったか」できます(^^;

また、「山月記」を知っているひとならば、もともとはこれを含めて四編の短編小説でセットになっている「古譚」の中の他三作品を読んでみるとさらに面白い！
短い文章の中に込められた強烈なモチーフ性が、芥川っぽくて好きです。
それなのに、なぜ、第十五回芥川賞とれなかったのか・・・。納得できませんねぇ。

　端正な中国もの ― 。中島敦の作品といえば一般的にそんなイメージだろうか。確かに彼の中国ものは典雅にしてつよく深い。他の人気文庫（作品集）もそれらを中心に収めている。

　だが、それだけか？

　本書は全集であるから、彼のそれ以外の面も知ることができる。例えば「光と風と夢」。主人公の英国人作家R.L.スティヴンスンは序盤から怒っている。当時の英・米・独が彼の定住するサモアの人々にあまりに「横暴」だからである。彼にとってサモアの人々は年月を重ねる中で、「我が褐色の友」となっていく。同じく呼吸器に重い病を抱える中嶋敦の主人公への強い思い入れを察するにつけ、ほとんど熱いとも言うべき温かさが伝わってくる。
　また、死を間近にした主人公が丘の上で感じたものは、視覚から入って全感覚に至る。その、息を呑むような鮮やかな体験を主人公と共有できるのは、目下全集だけである。

　他、植民政策下の朝鮮で屈折した心を抱える親友と、細やかすぎるほどに彼のプライドを気遣う少年の「私」を描く「虎狩」や、一高時代の習作「巡査の居る風景」などからも博学故の卓見、即ち矜持という概念を人間の尊厳へと押し広げた作者の深い認識がうかがえる。
　更に歌稿の「河馬の歌」のようにユーモアと優しさに和むものもあり、全集ならではの愉しみは多い。

中島敦＝漢語調。
このイメージが強いのは、やはり高校時代の国語の教科書で触れた「山月記」の影響だろうか。
しかし、中島敦作品は古代中国に題を求めたもの「だけ」ではない。
全集<１>に所収の「文字禍」はメソポタミアが舞台。また、芥川賞候補となった「光と風と夢」はイギリス人作家、
スティーブンソンのサモアでの生活記の体裁を採っている。スティーブンソンもまた若くしてこの世を去ったが、
中島敦はおのれの生の短いことを知りつつ、この小説を書いたのではないかと。
中島敦というこの不世出の作家の引出しの多さ、底しれぬ可能性を感じさせてくれる全集。
本当に早世が悔やまれてならない…
