山川ちはるは主婦で、女の子が二人いて、猫を飼ってて、旦那は家庭に関心がなくて・・・。

主人公ちはるの静かな孤独感と、それでも毎日生きている実感とが、ざらっと、でも嫌味なく伝わってくる、大人のための漫画です。キャラクターたちの表情や、お互いとのやり取りがとてもリアルで、心地よいです。

学生のころは、何となく読み飛ばしてしまいましたが、自分で家庭を持ってから読み返すと、怖いくらいリアリティを感じました。それでも読後にネガティブな感じではなく、爽快感を残すのが、この漫画のすごいところです。

この「しんきらり」という作品は、「ガロ」で長期連載されその後青林堂より正・続二刊で刊行され、のち筑摩書房より選集に収録され、そして文庫と、息の長い作品だ。もちろんそれはこの作品がすばらしいことの証明であろう。

主人公の山川ちはるはそのままやまだ紫に通じ、二人の子供というのも実際と同じ。違うのは主人公には夫がいるが、やまだは離婚して一人で子育てをしていたということくらいだ。それが、この作品を「私小説漫画」という紋切り型の批評をさせる所以である。馬鹿を言ってはいけない。自分の日常をそっくりそのまま垂れ流して作品になるだろうか。本人ははっきりと「フィクションであり、読者のことを考えて描いている」と語っている。そのことは同じく私小説作家と言われるつげ義春も全く同じことを語っており、こうした批評がいかに怠慢で、低脳かを物語っている。

平凡な一主婦が、どこにでもいる「鈍感な」夫と二人の子供と暮らしていく、その「日常」こそがこの作品の全てだ。そしてそれがこの作品のすごいところなのだ。この作品以降、似たような、そしてもっと「ドラマ」を追加して大衆に迎合した作家が雨後の筍のように増えた、というのは言いすぎだろうか。先駆者は、いつも見過ごされがちである。

最後に、この作品のファンには意外と「敏感な」男性が多い、と聞いた。

　私が学生のころに読んだので、今とは大分時代背景が異なるが、それでも名作には違いないと思う。真剣に取り組まないと深い穴にはまりそうな、そんな作品。示唆に富んだセリフ、夫婦や親子間での会話で満ちている。
　特に印象に残っているのは、国家的な問題になっている少子化に対する一つの答え。二人の子どもに赤ちゃんを産んでと言われた母親が、夫に向かって言う。「やっぱり無理だと思った。体力じゃないの。子どもってわけわからないうちに産んで育てるものなの。」言い得て妙だ。どこかにも書いたが、「子どもを産まない」という選択は「わけがわかってしまった人類」にしかできないわけで、進化の一つの形だと思う。
　「夢から醒めて、どうしましょうね、私たち」というのも、いろいろな夫婦の形に当てはまる怖い問いかけだ。「ヒナは巣立つものでしょ、でも親鳥は巣立たない。仲良くしましょうね、あなた」なんてのも、時々記憶の底から浮かび上がってくる。
　誰もがうっすら感じている曖昧な思いをスパッとはっきりした言葉にしてくれる、あなどれない作家の一人であることは確かだ。
