　著者の詩をもう一段味わえる詩の創作ノートのような部分も多い、大正、昭和、平成を生きた一人の詩人、一人の女性が書いたエッセー。「表札」や「私の前にある鍋とお釜と燃える火と」「弔詞」「くらし」など、良く知られている詩が生まれた時の著者の気持ちを知ると、これらの詩がさらに深みをまして届いてくる気がします。著者がどのような思いで詩を書き続けたのか書かれているのを読むと、言葉と生きること、生活することの関係の深さを教えられるようです。
　「ドレモコレモミンナクッテヤル」と、怖い笑いを感じさせる「シジミ」という詩。これにも「あのね、私といっしょに、もう少し遠くまで行きましょう」という言葉が添えられると、とたんにやさしさが加わってきます。「一人暮らしでは一回では食べきれない」で残ってしまうというところには、生活が身近にみえるようです。

　表題になった「ユーモアの鎖国」では、戦争の「美談」が「命がけのこっけいさ」と感じられるようになっていく時の流れが描かれます。働く女性の少なかった時代に働くこと。銭湯の情景。そんな、戦中からつい数十年前までの出来事をとらえて語られる言葉たちはゆっくり、ゆっくり読みたい懐かしさ。たった半世紀ぐらい前の生活の記憶も、年を追うごとに人の命の入れ替わりの中で消えて行きます。残してくれてありがとう、と言いたくなりました。

　優しいばかりではなく、ちょっぴり厳しく心に残った言葉を最後に引用します。りんさんの「りん」としたところが感じられる言葉です。
「ずいぶん生きてきた、と思いました。この先、ほんとうにひとりぽっちの老年が私をおとずれたとき、詩は私をなぐさめてくれるでしょうか？冗談ではない、という、もう一つの声が私をたたきます。そんな甘ったるいのが詩であるのなら、お砂糖でもナメテオケ。」
