幻想小説の代表的な作品で、マイル・ストーン的な存在の書です。
よく幻想小説の代表的な作品として紹介されることが多い作品で、読んでみたいと思いましたが、つたない英語力では、洋書では、あらすじを追うだけで精一杯で、味わって読むことができませんでした。
翻訳者は、博物学でも有名な荒俣宏氏で帝都物語といった小説も書いて、映画化もされて有名になりました。
翻訳は有名になる前から、持ち込みで若い頃から多く手がけているベテランです。
日本語に翻訳したのは、荒俣氏が初めてだと思います。
妖精文庫で出ていますが、長らく絶版でした。本書が刊行された時にはうれしく思ったものです。

ジョージ・マクドナルドが自らの若き日の体験を交えて描く大人のためのファンタジー。主人公は現実と幻像のはざまでさまざまな体験をしながら、読む者の魂をも浄化に導く。マクドナルドの代表作の一つ。
荒俣氏の訳はまさにこれ以上は望めない名訳。

　最初はファンタジーか、どのようなものだろう？と思って読み始めたが…。
どうやらそうではないらしい。確かに幻想的な世界で主人公は旅をしてゆくの
だが、読んでいていつも傍らに幻想的に対する違和感があった気がする。そこ
には死があって、それを書くのに幻想世界を使ったと言うべきか…。でも幻想
小説って死を扱うものが多いですよね。でも、他のものとはふた味ぐらい違う
気がする。幻想の世界が素晴らしいだけに特にそう思う。参ったな。
　終わり方が実にいい。ぞくっというか、おおお~というか。これではなんの
ことかわかりませんね。だから読んで体感してください。
　場がどんどん変わってゆくし、訳も読みやすいので、ぐんぐんページが進み
ます。
　星は三つですが、これはまだ一度しか読んでいないので。読めば読むほど星
アップの予感がします。確かに、難解な作品。だからそのぶん面白い。
