ちくま文庫から、イエイツ編『ケルト妖精物語』『ケルト幻想物語』、イエイツ著『ケルトの薄明』の３冊が出ています。
イエイツ(1865-1939)が、民間伝承の蒐集を選択し編纂した二冊の本を、さらに編訳したものが『ケルト妖精物語』『ケルト幻想物語』です。

そのうち、妖精に関する物語と詩篇を集めたものがこの『ケルト妖精物語』です。嘆きの妖精バンシー、海に棲み漁師を惑わすメロウ、靴直し妖精レプラホーンなどに興味のあるかたは、ぜひこれを。

イエイツの編纂した上述の二冊が十九世紀のアイルランドで文芸復興運動を促進させたという歴史的見地からも、また、アイルランドの民間信仰への興味からも、また物語を純粋に楽しむ読書としても、非常に楽しめる３冊だと思います。

この民話集を読んでいて痛快なのは、それが教訓的ではないところだと思います。イエイツは『ケルトの薄明』の中で、次のように述べています。

「人々の想像力は、むしろ幻想的で気まぐれなもののなかに住んでいる。そして幻想も気まぐれも、もしそれらが善なり悪なりと結びつけられるようなことがあれば、それらの命の息吹きであるところの自由さを失ってしまうのだ。」
その編者の視点により選ばれた作品群は、宗教の枠に縛られず、貧乏人も王もユーモアをもって生き生きと語られていると思います。

３冊ともお勧めです。

　大学の講義についていくため、神話の知識が必要になり、この本を手に取りました。妖精を知るにはちょうどいい入門書だと思います。

　まず文章が美しい。編者のエイツ氏が美文家であったことも関係しているのでしょうが、それを日本語に訳し切った井村君江氏の仕事もなかなか素晴らしい。

　次に妖精や、取り替え子、ひとり暮らしの妖精などについての物語がたくさん載ってます。それほど厚さのある本ではありませんが、読み応えがあります。文字通り、ケルト妖精物語に誘ってくれると思う。
　妖精をアイルランドの民俗学にからめて分析している点も興味深いところです。
