1932年、山口県に生まれる。在日朝鮮人二世として、さまざまな困難の中、多くの職業を経験、その間独学。最初の小説『夜がときの歩みを暗くするとき』(筑摩書房)を発表し、以後作家生活に入る(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　自分にとって大切な本があまりにも低い評価だったので、たまらずに書きました。人生について書かれた本はたくさん読んできたのですが、この本は自分にとってはとても大切な本のひとつです。
　ひとりの人間が「人生」というあまりにも漠然とした、しかし最も重い命題に対していったい何が書けるというのだろうか？それぞれの人生を歩む上で得てきた自分なりのものを真摯に示し、そこで自分はどう思うのか、そして読者はどうかと問いかける。これ以外にどう書けるというのだろうか。具体的なことを示し抽象的なことを問う、これが人生を語る上での良書の要素ではないかと思います。この本はそういう意味で良書です。人は望む望まないにかかわらず生まれてきた、という不条理を皆平等に抱えて生きています。日本に生まれ育った日本人には想像もつかない不条理を背負い、生き抜かねばならない少年の育っていく姿、そしてそれに絡んでくる人たちの姿をみて自分なりに多くを学んだ気がします。
　「生きることの意味」という題名をつけるとき、著者はひどく迷ったのではないかと想像します。朴直すぎてあまりにもわざとらしいから。ですが、生きることに悩む人たちにとっては直球で心にぶつかったくるはずです。星の数に惑わされず気になったらぜひ読んで下さい。読んでみて全然心に響かなかったらそれはそれでいいじゃないですか。それが読書なのですから。

小学生の夏休み頃、家の本棚においてあるこの本をとって、
家の2階でクーラーも、扇風機もかけずに、汗をかきながら、涙がとまらなかった記憶がある。

感受性豊かだった時期ということもあると思うが、一言で言うと
理不尽という名の暴力に扱われる少年にひどく感情移入してしまった。

あれから読み返していませんが、涙を流した記憶はなかなか消えないものです。。。

在日朝鮮人二世として苦しい少年時代を過ごした高さんの生い立ちを辿りながら、いろいろなことを考えさせてくれる。死さえ考えながら周囲の人々の優しさに支えられて成長した彼が、この本を著した後12歳の息子を自殺で失ってしまう。そのことを知りながら読むと胸が痛むが、なおいっそう深いところで書かれた文章が心に響いてくる。息子さん（岡真史）の死後発見された詩を集めた「ぼくは12歳」とともに、是非読んでおきたい本だ。
