耳袋というアヤカシものをまとめた本の作者として有名な南町奉行所の奉行根岸肥前守。
耳袋自体は話の中にちょこっとしか出てこないので、
ソレを期待して読む本ではない。
赤鬼奉行とあるのは、赤鬼の刺青が奉行の肩にある、という意味で、
鬼神のごとく、ばったばったと敵を討つ奉行という意味でもない。
表題のつけ方があざとい感じはするけれど、話の内容は星4つ分ぐらいの面白さはあると思う。

奉行職に付いた時点で肥前守はすでに60歳を超えているので、
鬼平の派手さも、金さんの気風のよさもないけれど、
なかなか喰えないじいさまが、面白がりながらかつ、
温かみをもって事件を解決していく作りになっている。
政治上のいざこざに巻き込まれたり、一方で下世話に事件を解決したり、
飽きさせない構成になっているとも思う。

ただ、本を開いてびっくりしたのが、字の大きさと行間の広さ。
文字が少ないってことかな？気軽に読める、ということでもあるか。。。
もう少し書き込みがあると、もっと面白くなる。。。かもしれない。

　本書は実在した南町奉行、根岸肥前守をモデルにした連作長編小説。ただ、連作長編にしては縦糸が細く、連作短編集にしては前後の話の繋がりが強すぎるので、読んでいて中途半端な感じがしました。
　あらすじは、抜け荷の疑いがある薬種問屋と根岸肥前守の失脚を画策する旗本が、第1話から第5話まで終始暗躍し、各話ごとに、しゃべる猫、古井戸の祟り、小侍の幽霊、絶倫老女、巫女の交霊とラインナップされています。内容としては耳袋を意識して、奇妙な事件を並べたようです。
　江戸の町並みの描写などは乏しく、寧ろ人物に焦点を当てて描かれています。人物造詣はユニークで面白い。お奉行周辺の人物･脇役もそこそこ描けています。
　結論として、もう少し深く描いたら、もっと面白い時代小説になると思いました。

　文庫書き下ろし。
　江戸時代の奇譚を集めた『耳袋』を記した根岸鎮衛は、南町奉行を務めた幕府高官でもあった。その根岸を主人公に、妖異と捕物帳を合わせた世界を展開したのが本シリーズ。
　連作短篇の形を取っている。
　ネコがしゃべったり、橋に幽霊が出たり、井戸に怪異が起こったり。それに殺人事件がからんでくる。発想としては面白いし、良く売れているのも分かる。
　ただ、物語の質はあまり高くないと思う。少なくとも、人物の魅力やストーリーの面白さは感じられなかった。また、怪異が十分に生かされていない点が不満。
　このシリーズは、すごいスピードで続編が出ている。
