英語の長文を読む際に何が大切なのでしょうか？

勘に頼ってやフィーリングで読むという人はこの本は必要ないでしょう。この本は英文法を用いて長文を読み解く力を付けることを主題として書かれています。そのため200ページほどの中に練習問題を含めてもわずか十二問しか問題があらず、その他は長い長い解説に当てられるという構成になっています。前書きだけで12ページもあるという他の受験参考書とは明らかに一線を画すこの本ですが、文法という明確な判断基準を持っている為一度理解すれば大きな力となることは間違いないでしょう。丸暗記から脱却したい人にお勧めできる一冊です。

長文の解説は、数学の証明問題のように説明されています。

私が好きな部分は、重要語彙の解説の部分で、例えば、「equivalentという形容詞はto/ofで意味の使いわけが行われる。toを使う場合は近さが強調されて同じと解釈され、ofを使う場合は分離が強調され同等という意味になる。（さらに続く）」等、暗記一辺倒になりがちな単語の意味を、ほぼ１ページ使って解説してくれています。結果として、分った気になるだけの単語集、構文／長文解説本と違い、この参考書では、読んだ後、分かるか分からないかのどちらかです。
分かる部分は一生忘れられない程、印象的ですが、私の場合、分からない所もたくさん有りました。
それでも、分った気になるだけのその場しのぎの本よりも価値が高い本だと思います。

内容的にかなりしっかりしています。
知識や長文解釈の方法、文法技術的な解法も書かれていますが、
頭の使い方まで教えてくれる点が印象的でした。
特に、２問目の「背理法」を使って解くところは本当に刺激的でした。
また、単語の解説もあって非常に参考になります。


ツッコミ所も満載な一冊です。
「はしがき」と「終わりに」だけで３０ページくらいあったり
その中に息子さんの名前が出てきたり、人類滅亡の話があったり、
相変わらずの毒舌が書いてあったり、色んな意味で楽しませてくれます。
（と言っても、この人の書くものには無駄がほとんど無く
人類滅亡の話でさえ考えさせられるものがあります。）
　



対象は
長文の問題を勘やフィーリングではなく、明確なプロセスを以って解けるように
なりたい方にお薦めです。
結構難しいので、きちんと基礎力が固まってからがよいでしょう。
解説を理解するだけでも骨が折れる上に、かなり長いですが、きちんと
やりこなしてみて下さい。
頭のレベルが根本から上がると思います。


また、富田系でいく人は「１００の原則」のみならず、
可能であれば、「論理と解法」をやってからこの本に入ってみて下さい。

きっと、この本に対する理解が一層深まると思います。
