経済小説だと思って読み始めると、ちょっと違和感を覚えると思う。半導体に関する新技術を発見した主人公が、その新技術の開発に熱心でない会社を飛び出し、シリコンバレーにベンチャー企業を立ち上げる物語。順調に進めばよいのだが、その新技術があまりにも革新的なものであり、既存技術で十分な利益を得ている人たちの既得権を害するため、色々な妨害工作にぶつかってしまう。いつの間にか、巨大コンピュータメーカーと石油メジャーの覇権争いに巻き込まれていく。前半は文系人間にとっては何やら小難しい技術的な話もあり、読み進めることに対してちょっと不安感を持つが、そこを我慢して読みこなせば、あとは一転、読みやすい冒険小説的な風合いになる。一連のドタバタを通じて、いつの間にか主人公が日本企業の一技術社員から立派なベンチャー企業社長に成長しているところが爽快である。前半の丁寧な記述に比べて、後半の覇権争いの記述が大雑把になっている点が残念だが、水準以上の作品に仕上がっている。

「覇権の標的」というタイトル，ハードボイルドな表紙，経済小説の賞を受賞，ということからの予想を裏切る（？！）内容でした．
設計ミスから偶然発見された半導体の回路技術，しかも超低消費電力化の特許を巡って展開されます．
この特許技術についてもそうですが，日本の半導体大企業の体質，シリコンバレーのベンチャ企業とそこで頑張っている人の生態，米国大企業の技術系トップの振る舞いが，きわめてリアルです．まるでノンフィクションのよう．
途中からサスペンス・アクション映画を見ているような息も切らせぬ展開となり，一気に読了．
最後の驚くべき結末．本当の半導体技術者が読むと，涙するか，怒るか，どちらかでしょう．
半導体技術者・組み込み技術者にも，ぜひ読んでほしいですね．

私は、この本、片道４５分の通勤電車内だけで読むつもりだったのに、３日目にして「会長」が「倒れ」てから我慢できなくなり、その晩、最後まで読み切ってしまいました。日本技術者の現場がきちんと書かれているので、その後の世界を舞台にした展開に興奮できるのだと思います。主人公の技術者は、舞台の急展開で、よりスケールの大きな登場人物に遭遇して成長して行きます。そういうところが好きですね。アメリカの、良質な、テンポの良い映画を見ているようにも思いました。
