意外に知られていないが、サンヨー電機はまともな電化製品を世に送り出している良心的なメーカーだ。
それを証明しているのが、本書。洗剤ゼロの洗濯機だ。
日本の家電品（耐久消費財を含む）は買い換えを促すように作られている。
洗剤や化粧品と同じく、車や洗濯機、冷蔵庫などのＣＭを見ない日はないだろう。車は安全性を技術革新などで追求する事が至上命題になっているかもしれないが、洗濯機や冷蔵庫など単純な機能のものが、なぜあれほどモデルチェンジを繰り返えさなければならないのか？理由は上記した通りだ。
ヨーロッパでは洗濯機は２００ボルトのドラム式（最近の斜めドラムはまったくダメ）、冷蔵庫も２００ボルトとだいたい決まっている。
２００ボルトにする理由はパワーの違いだ。洗濯機なら汚れ落ち、脱水で違いが現れ、冷蔵庫は冷やす能力が格段に違う。
サンヨー電機はまったく新しい「無洗剤」機能を取り入れた。こういうのが技術革新、新機能搭載の新製品と呼べるのだ。
ドラムを斜めにしたりお湯を汲み取る機能をつけることを技術革新とは言わない。ドラム式は洗濯物をかきあげて叩き落すから汚れ落ちが格段に優れている、これを斜めにしたら洗濯物を入れやすいだけだ。腰を曲げない（落とさない）使いやすさがユニバーサルデザインとはチャンチャラおかしくてヘソが茶を沸かす。
