帯には「変化する情報化社会の『今と未来』を考える“新しい窓”　みんなで語り、みんなで学ぶ情報教育のテキスト」と書かれている。小学校高学年の子どもに、情報化社会のい「いま」を伝え、未来について考えるきっかけ作りとなることを目的として書かれた本。
これからの世界でなくなるといいな、と思うもの（迷子、犯罪、病気など）、なくならないでほしいもの（友だち、死の実感、季節感など）、どっちがいいのか考えてみてほしいもの（学校、病院、お年寄りの世話など）、今後どうなるのか考えてみてほしいもの（お金、会議、自家用車、会社など）の4つのテーマで、現在のテクノロジーについて紹介し、今後の展望を語っている。
テーマによって、2005年の現状を伝える社会史のテキストのようでもあり、文明論的になっている部分もあり、色々考えさせられる。
この本が書いている「今」と「未来」について、自分なりに咀嚼し、自分なりの見解をもって、子どもと一緒に読みたい、そんな本である。
1テーマが見開き2ページで読みやすく、緑を基調とした装丁もきれいで（再生紙、植物性インク等環境に配慮した素材を使い、環境教育にもなるように考えられている）、少しずつ、それぞれのテーマについて考察しながら読み進めたい本。
おそらく、ほんの数年のうちに技術革新が進み、現状と見合わなくなる部分が出ているテーマもあるとは思うが、それでもなお、これからの時代について考察するヒントになると思う。
電話、テレビ、コンピュータ、電池の歴史について書かれたコラムも、わかりやすくまとめられている。

「なくならないでほしいな」
心からそう思える本です。

楽しいイラスト入りで子供向けにわかりやすく書かれていますが、
大人が読んでも十分に共感できる本です。
「なくならないでほしいな」の章にリストアップされているのは、
友だち、漢字、年賀状、砂浜、季節感、など「そうそう！！」と
思わずうなずいてしまうものばかりです。

環境を意識した、緑色の表紙もよい感じ。

子供だけでなく大人もこの本を読んで、人間らしさを
忘れないでほしいと心から願います。
