　タイトルが示すように、この本には、著者の父と、著者自身の半生が描かれている。
　父親は大手都市銀行で役員を務め、頭取候補と目されていた人物。不幸にして会議中に急逝してしまう。息子である著者は、学生結婚をし、大学は５年かけて卒業するも、転職をくり返し、硬軟取り混ぜてさまざまな職業に就く。
　もちろんふたりの経歴は、そのアウトラインだけを見れば、平凡な家庭に育ち、平凡に暮らすぼくのそれとは大きな隔たりがある。
　しかし、ここで描かれている原風景は、解説の森達也氏も書いているように、同世代に生まれたぼくらのそれととてもよく似ている。
　昭和と平成、このまったく異なった個性をもつふたつの時代に、ぼくらは翻弄されているのではないか。
　一見何気ない著者の父親の死は、実はとてつもなく大きなものに飲み込まれた結果だったのではないか、そう赤澤が気づいたときに、彼は父との邂逅を果たす。
　まるでミステリー小説を読むがごとく一気にスリリングに読んだ。一冊のハードボイルド小説にふたりの主人公が同時に成立するのかどうかはわからないが、間違いなく、父と息子のふたりはタフガイな主人公である。ピアノとバイオリンといった異質なふたつの楽器が、ひとつの協奏曲で楽しめる、そんな本である。

一組の父子の話として面白く読みました。
それが、日本の社会の変化を鮮明に浮き彫りにしている、かどうかは分かりません。父がいったいどんな仕事をしていたのかを、子どもが理解する機会があっただけ、著者は幸せでしょう。なかなか分からない事だと思います。
