本書を読まれた方のほとんどは、オバマ上院議員の政策に賛成するか否かに関係なく、議員が非常に政治家として優れいていることに同意せざるを得ない。

リベラルでありつつも保守的である議員は、政治に最も必要なバランス感覚に優れておられ、本書の端々でそのことを痛感させられた。

また、なぜオバマ上院議員が大統領の椅子に最も近い人物のひとりになることができたかということを知ることができるだろう。

しかしそれ以上に理解すべきことは、現在のアメリカの政治が構造的に有している問題に対して、それらの問題を生み出しかねない立場の人物が、解決するために取り組んでいる状況がアメリカにはあるということだ。

もちろん、他人の芝は青く見えるという諺が示すように、アメリカの政治家だから力強く正当な活動をしているように感じたのかもしれないが、多くの日本の政治家には、あれほどの著作を生み出せないのではないかと思った。

また、日本語訳に関しては、英語特有の言い回しはそれほど見られず、自然な感じを受けた。

昨年末にこの本を読むまでは、オバマ氏についてはあまり知りませんでした。しかし、この「合衆国再生」を読んで、アメリカに何十年に一度の本物の政治家が現れたと感じました。彼の経歴、実践、政治への信念が正直に自信に満ちた形でここには書かれています。ワシントンのロビイストや影響力のエージェントの手にある政治を、懸命に生きて幸せになろうとしている一般市民の手に取り戻そう。そして、アメリカ建国時や公民権運動の時代の精神を思い出し、「分断」ではなく「信頼」と「連帯感」に基づく国づくりにもう一度励もうと、オバマ氏は語りかけています（実際に彼にはケネディーやキング牧師に似たカリスマ性があり、スピーチも非常にうまい）。オバマは文章もうまい、本書は翻訳もいい。これに興味を持てれば、95年に書かれた自伝もお薦めです。オバマファンになった私は、本書をもう一度読み返しながら、原文のニュアンスも知りたくてPaperbackもオーダーしました。

　第44代米国大統領に就任する氏によるアメリカの問題点と、それに対する
処方箋＋自身が政治家になること（目指したこと）による家庭の問題を記した
一冊。

　例えば・・・

・どんな理由で彼は政治家を志したのか？
・イリノイ州上院議員として、米国上院議員として何を成したのか？
・アメリカとっての問題とは何か？そしてそれを解決する為の手段は？

　・・・といったことを率直に語っています。その中では己の欠点や失敗も
（それが全てか否かは別にして）きちんと記しています。

　原著タイトル"The AUDACITY of HOPE（大いなる希望）"名の通り、確かに
アメリカには問題が山積。でも、それを打開する方法はあって、それを成せば
皆が希望を（特に低〜中所得層）抱ける国なのだ、と説いています。

　そして、それを信じた人は彼に来年からの4年間を託しました。

　海の向こうの「友人」としては、新大統領が何を考えているのか？という
ことを、率直に語っている本書を読んでおいて損は無いと考える次第です。

　原著と比べた訳では無いですが、読みやすい翻訳（日本語として変な表現が
無い）、カタカナ言葉への注釈など、読者へのの配慮も好感が持てます。

附：個人的には78pの「共感することの利益」に特に感銘を覚えました。
（今のアメリカ政権中枢に一番不足している感覚だと思うのです）
