この本は、カタカナのアイウエオ順で世界の言語１０１２個と２５４カ国の言語状況についてごく簡単に基礎的な情報が紹介されます。

この本はごく小さく、情報量も多くなく、「ハンドブック」というより「字引」のような感じです。情報に関しては、「言語学大辞典」のような事典類はもとより、インターネットのethnologueなどでもより詳細な情報が割と簡単に手に入ります。ですから、ある言語の名前をカタカナ名を見てさっと元の英語表記を知りたい時ぐらい役に立つだろうと思いますが、それ以上の情報を求めれば、この本では期待が裏切られると思います。

世界の言語についての基本情報がまとめられている。
言語の系統、特徴、使用範囲、使用人口、など。
言語名と国名の両方で調べられるが便利。
たとえば、「アフガニスタン」という国名の項には、アフガニスタンで使用されている言語が列挙されているので、今度はその言語の項を個別に見ればよい。
「英語に入った日本語」という特集も興味深い。

私の知っている古代語のうち、いくつかが載っていなかったが、あまりにマイナーなものだからだろう。
小さな本なので、手もとにあれば、便利ではないか。
