結構知らないことがたくさんあって、面白い本でした。
クイズ形式なのでさくさく進み、すぐ終わることができました。
英語の知識が足りないことを思い知らされました。
気軽に読める楽しい本でしたが、この本で英語力を上げるまでにはいかないかな〜と思い星一つ減らしときます。

本書は生活に根ざしたシンプルな英語をクイズ形式で解説した新書です。アメリカの小学生が普通に話す内容をどれだけ知っているかを確認するために、本書は「英語生活力検定」と題しています。これは本書独自のもので、実際にはこのような検定は現時点ではないのであくまでも目安ということになります。

日本で英語を勉強していると、意外と日常生活の身近なことを英語で言えない場合が多いと思います。例えば動物の鳴き声、調理用具の名前、食材の名前、赤ちゃん言葉、算数で使う言葉、美容に関することばなどです。本書はこれらの日常で身近に使う英語生活力を学びたい、知りたい人にお勧めです。

クイズの答えの記号が数字でないものの方が答え合わせがしやすく分かりやすかったと思うので、星4つの評価にしました。

　日本の中学高校の英語クラスではなかなかお目にかからないけれど、英語ネイティブなら子供でも知っているであろう日常基本表現をどこまで把握できるか確認するための問題集です。そのクイズの数は４３６問。といっても肩に力を入れず読み物として楽しみながらひとつひとつ解答していくと、なんとなく自分がどういう分野の英語表現に疎いのかが見えてくるでしょう。

　私はなんとか３９０問以上は答えられましたが、それでも料理や学校生活にまつわる分野にはボキャブラリーが足りないということが今さらながらよくわかりました。
　料理は得意ではありませんから　「野菜を炒める」とか「卵をとく」、「もやし」や「ほたて」をどう英語で言うのかがさっぱりでした。
　また留学経験がないので、英語圏の子供でも知っている「追試」「通信簿」「平行四辺形」といった言葉にもなじみがありません。さすがに今から英語で「追試」を受けたり「通信簿」をもらうことはないと思いますが、それでも今後何かの拍子にネイティブと話をしていてこうした表現に出くわさないとも限りません。私は日常的に英語を使って仕事をしているので、「英語生活力」があるにこしたことはないと思っています。その意味では、本書は読み物としても楽しめましたし、英語の勉強の足しにもなったと思います。

　欲を言えば、それぞれのクイズの解答編すべてに、問いが扱っている英語表現を使った例文を掲載してくれればなおよかったのではないでしょうか。確かに一部の表現にはわかりやすい例文が付されていますが、それでも　英語は単語帳ではなく例文で学ぶものという信条の私には、すべての英語表現に例文がほしかったところです。
　私自信が誤答した英語は　すべて例文をネットサイト上から探しだして　ノートに書きとめました。

　続編が出ればぜひ手にしてみたい一冊でした。
