読んだのは８年ほど前、ロンドン留学のためにせっせと英語の勉強をしていたときでした。様々な語学学習書を読みましたが、どれもちょっとしたフレーズや文法をまとめただけのもので、状況に応じた言葉の選択や気持ちを伝える技術の習得にはまったく役に立ちませんでした。しかしこれはコミュニケーションのための英語の考え方を詳しく解説した本として、私には実に貴重でした。丁寧な表現と気さくな表現、そしてそれを使わなければならない場面と使ってはいけない場面などなど、英語という言葉を使いこなす基本原理が系統的に述べられています。現在、再び渡欧に向けて英語を勉強し直していますが、驚くべきことに、本当に役に立つ教則本を見つけることは当時と同様に今も困難です。英語学習書の粗製乱造時!代は相変わらずですので、このような良書をしっかりと読みこなすことが、文法中心・語彙中心の日本人には必要だと思います。解説が詳しいために中級・上級者向けの本に見えますが、むしろ初級者こそ読むべき本です。この本と同様に多くの重要な考え方を解説した「ナチュラル・イングリッシュ」リチャード・メイナード著を併せて推薦します。

　商用で初対面の人と英語で会話する際、遠慮や謙遜といった微妙なニュアンスをきちんと表現できているのか、ずっと心許ない思いをしてきました。
　これは様々な英語表現の含意を豊富な例文とともに詳しく解説した書です。そしてこの本を読むと、私の英語は相手にとってかなり不躾で必要以上にきつく聞こえる場合があることが判明し、赤面せざるをえませんでした。

　例えば、
　「それを貸してくれますか？」というつもりで｢Could you lend it to me?｣というのは、＜あなたは私の利益になるようそれを貸して私に仕える義務がある＞という含みがあるとか。
　こういう場合は相手の行為に言及した「lend」という動詞を使うのではなく、自分の行為に言及して「Could I borrow it?」というべきだというのです。確かにそういえば、ハリウッド映画やアメリカのテレビドラマでは大人同士の会話では「Could I borrow it?」という表現のほうが圧倒的に多い気がします。

　他にも
　I’m leaving at 8.30 on Saturday morning. と
　I’m going to leave at 8.30 on Saturday morning.
　という二つの表現についても初めてその差異が分かりました。中学の授業ではこの二つはどちらも未来を表す表現だとしか習いませんでしたが、前者は既に切符を買うなど手配済みの予定であるのに対して、後者は自分だけで既に決めて自分だけが知っている「意図」であって手はずが整っているわけではないというのです。
　ちなみにI’ll leave at 8.30 on Saturday morning.となると、その場で決めたばかりの未来で、もちろん切符など買っていない状況だとか。

　中学校の英語の先生はぜひこの本を読んで、授業に活かしてもらいたいものです。

コミュニケーションの相手や状況をさまざまに想定し、適した表現ができるよう丁寧に解説してある本です。ものの尋ね方なども、表現の強弱を図で説明してあり記憶に残りやすいと思います。また単に表現について説明されているだけでなく、英語圏の人々の"考え方"や習慣に触れてあるので、より深い理解を得られると思います。ぜひご一読を･･･。
