北宋末の芸術家・書家であった米フツの評伝としては、現在、一番まとまって、優れた本だと思います。特に、1章「米フツの生涯」が優れています。生没年代の決定や、墓誌の読み方などは行き届いています。米フツの様々なエピソードが活きいきと語られていて、昔の中国の文人の伝記など堅苦しくて嫌だという人にも、お薦めできます。

2章の収集家・鑑定家としての米フツは、レーダローゼ氏も細かく書いていましたが、この本の記述もなかなかなものだと思います。他人の意見も並べておいて、自分はこう考えると述べるスタンスは好感がもてます。

３章の書道家としての米フツの分析も、活躍時期を３期に分けた明快なもので、参考になります。惜しいことに、各作品の所蔵場所や法量が全部明記されてはいないので、どの作品のことを述べているのか、判らなくなることがあります。著者は中田勇次郎「米フツ」を参照しているようですが、この豪華限定大型本は、読者が簡単に参照できるとは思えないので、この本だけでわかるようにして欲しかった。
3章「日本への影響」の市川米庵のエピソードも面白く読みました。
