山梨先生による待望の最新刊。認知文法の枠組みの概説書としても、それによる言語分析の研究書としても一読に値する。ラネカーなどの原著に当たる前に一度本書に目を通しておくだけでも随分理解が変わってくるはず。

読者レベルであるが、生成文法と認知言語学のアプローチの違いをしっかりと理解している学生、すなわち大学院生以上が目安だろうか。書き口はソリッドで思考力を要求してくる。

特筆すべきは、ナイダ、パイク、ブルームフィールド、サピアといった構造言語学者、イェスペルセン、オニオンズら記述文法学者らの文献をも踏まえた形で、認知言語学のパラダイムの再規定を試みている点であろう。やはりラネカーやレイコフなどの認知言語学の文献ばかり読んでいては研究者としての地力はつかないことを身を持って感じることができる。

　一度認知言語学の大家である山梨先生に直接教えを請いてみたものだが、なかなかそうもいかない。しかしその研究の最先端である本書の登場で、手元においてじっくり教えを受けることができる。
　前半では認知言語学の基本的な考え方やパラダイムを整理、概観する。特に本書の主題である、単純な構成性の原理では扱えない構文現象を「ゲシュタルト性」から論じあげていく。
　創造的な構文の広がり、語用論的な観点など、ともすればとりとめがなくなってしまいがちな言語の側面に真正面に切り込み、その性質をときあかす。それは、認知言語学の方法論やパラダイムが精緻化してきたことの表れであろう。
　認知言語学でしか明らかにしえなかったパースペクティブと成果の興奮と醍醐味を味わうことのできる一冊である。
