　「おっ、これはおもしろそうだ」と丸暗記しようなどと勇ましい気持ちは決して起こしませんように（私のように）。ページを開いたとたんに挫折しますから。
　これはやはりタイトルにあるとおり「辞典」です。コラムも「音位転換」「尻切れトンボ」「en- と -en」などとても興味深く学問的おもしろさをちょっぴり教えてくれます。見出し語こそ少数ですが内容はそれに天文学的広がりを持たせたものだ、と言っても大げさではないと私は感じます。見出し語の太い幹に接頭辞、接尾語、派生語、関連語、語源などが多数の豊かな枝葉となってコンパクトな巨大辞典を造り上げています。

　すばらしい辞典と言うことは十分わかるのですが、私のような初心者には利用価値がよくわからずに取っつきにくい、と感じるかもしれません。まずは英和辞典を引いた時についでにこちらも引いてみるかなあ、くらいの軽い気持ちで使い始めるとよいかもしれません。その繰り返しでいつの間にか、いい辞書だと本当の価値がだんだんとわかってくるユニークな辞典です。

　購入して、ぱらぱらとページをめくってみると「Bankrupt：破産」の解説が目に飛び込んで来ました。
　bank銀行＋rupt破産した→銀行が破産した→破産。
　この説明は省略のしすぎではないでしょうか？bankの原義はbanca：ベンチであり、中世イタリアでベンチでの両替交渉が決裂すると、ベンチをひっくり返す：rottaすることで「事業継続が出来ない→破産」を示すことが英語圏に伝わったと聞いています。
　また、「theory」はギリシア語の「theoria：観想（実践を伴わない静かな思索）」に由来し、現代科学で「理論」に転用されているのに本書では
見る→じっと見る→考える→考え、理論という説明だけです。
　語根を中心に英単語の意味が拡張されていく説明は簡潔・機能的で使いやすいので、ある程度英語の単語が頭に入ってきた学習者が単語の整理・拡張をするには重宝する辞典との評価は出来ます。
　ただし、言葉と文化の関連については、紙幅の制約もあり、多くを期待出来ないため、評価は普通の☆3個とさせていただきました。
