昔から「英和辞典は用途に応じて使い分けなければならない」と言われてきた。なぜなら，収録語彙の多い辞書ほど学習辞典的要素は切り捨てられ，語彙の充実と専門的記述が図られるためである。

しかしこの大辞典はその「常識」を破った。大辞典であるにもかかわらず，「ＣＵ（可算・不加算）表示」が入っている。「ジーニアス英和辞典」で培ってきた語法情報や，英作文のために実用的な例文がたくさん盛り込まれている。もちろん大辞典としての語彙は「研究社大英和」並に収録しているし，語義の掘り下げも深い。訳語が「リーダーズ」ほどこなれていない感もあるが，それ以上に得られるものはある。
英語学習者が少し背伸びして使える「大辞典」である。

ジーニアスファミリーの「おおもと」ともいえる辞典です。研究社の英和大辞典に匹敵します。しかし、研究社の「権威主義」的な辞書作りに比べ、大修館の辞書の方が謙虚さと丁寧さを持って作られており、より学習者のことを考えて作られていると思います。語法も大修館月刊誌「英語教育」のQuestionBoxを反映させており、語法も細部に渡り注釈付で解説されており、この大事典があれば、他に英和・語法辞典は要らないでしょう。かといって「権威」的でなく高校生から使える辞書です。この辞書の唯一にして最大の欠点は「でかく重い」の１点です。「小さく軽い」辞書であればどこにでも持ち運ぶ事ができると思います。なお、前述のQuestionBoxの中で誤り等、使用者からの指摘を受けて、編集者の小西友七氏は謙虚に修正を加えている点もこの辞書をいいものにしていくと思います。

大辞典レベルの辞書を使って単語を調べる目的はなんだろう？
意味だけを知りたいなら、リーダーズや英辞郎、グランドコンサイス英和辞典を使えばいい。

でも、なんでジーニアス大英和を使うかっていると、
意味だけじゃなくて、語法も、語源も、文法なんかも載ってるから。
しかも、ただ載っているだけじゃなく、ジーニアスならではの詳しさも兼ね備えている。
確かに、用途に応じて様々な辞書を使い分けるのも一つの手だけれど、
ジーニアス大英和を使えば、自分が欲しかった情報以外も手に入って役に立つ。

それぞれの大英和がそれぞれの特徴を持ってるけど、「ガイジン」として英語を使っていく以上は、
最低限、文法や、語法を確認しなくちゃいけない。

そんなときに役に立つのがジーニアス大英和なんだと思う。
