本書は弁護士であり、米国推理小説家のアンドリュー・ヴァクスが序を飾り、
この道の先鋭でもある心理学教授フランク・Ｒ・アシオーンが本論を本論を奏で、
大学准教授でもある気鋭の精神科医、横山章光が訳を手がける。

これらの豪華執筆陣が一同に会し着手した問題は「動物虐待」。

小児虐待について深く知ろうとすれば自ずと動物虐待の問題にも直面してくる。
家庭内暴力の側面にはペットへの暴力の存在があるケースもある。
聞くにおぞましい凶悪犯罪のエピソードの陰には動物への暴行があったのだとメディアが言う。

喚起は繰り返されるものの、根本的な取り組みは最近までなされなかった。
本書はそれらの面に対して目をそむけずに真っ向から研究に取り組んだ偉大な結果である。

虐待についての総合的な展望が補完できるのは本書を読んだ後だと言っても過言ではない。

それだけ動物虐待というものを知ることが重要であり、
それだけ本書がこの問題についての尖鋭であるということだ。

時には数世紀にも遡る膨大なデータと臨床の現場による声を参照することで、
動物虐待と家庭内暴力、小児虐待の繋がりを科学的に明らかにし、
複合的な視点から虐待の現場を検証していく。

これらのデータの多くは基本的にアメリカで得られたものである。
しかし、そこから導き出される理論は日本の種々の虐待現場においても褪色のない働きを見せる機会が来る。
そう信じるに値する満足のいくものである。

堅苦しい話はここまでだ、まずは目を通してほしい。
そして本書から得られた知識を通してこの国の現状に目を向けてほしい。
