文化が辺境へ伝播されると、本家本元よりもはるかに純化された形で狂信的に存続することがある。韓国における儒教や、日本の片田舎におけるロカビリーなどがそのいい例だ。

モッズとは、イギリスの文化・歴史的背景からかなり複雑な階層構造を織り成しているらしい。だが、この東京モッズとかいう人たちは、モッズのごく一部だけを取り出して表層だけをなぞり
金科玉条のごとくそれを後生大事に守り続ける。本家モッズとは全く別の人たちのようだ。

個人主義の国の文化なのに、皆判で押したように殆ど同じ格好をして群れを成している。あまつさえそれは日本人の貧相な体型にはそぐわない。

モッズについて真剣に考えれば考えるほど、日本人がモッズであることの滑稽さを痛感してしまう。自分が大好きなものが自分には全く似合わないという哀しい宿命に気付いた時、どうするべきか。
似非白人気取りで何も考えずモッズごっこに励むのか、それとも．．．．．

　英国のモッズではなく、東京のネオ・モッズの状況についての本である。そこらへんイメージに落差をもたないこと。
　「東京何とか」と頭に街の名をつけるのはたいてい三流なのだが、中にはいいものも稀にある。

　東京は流れ去っていく街だ。20年前の痕跡などほとんど残っていない。思い出のある人にとっては貴重な映像である。

　なにもネオ・モッズだけに限った話ではないが、みんなで作り出しているシーンを私物化しようとする傾向はなんとかならないものか。例えばツバキハウスは客もDJも店員もみなが一体となって何かを作り出していた。そしてひとりでも入場させてくれた。オープンだったのである。

東京MODSシーン、黎明期から現在までのドキュメント。感動すら憶えます。憧れからスタート、試行錯誤しながら、一つのムーブメントが形成されていく様が綴られています。貴重な写真の数々が、何よりも一番、その瞬間・時代を語っています。東京MODSシーンの生き証人たちの対談も胸を熱くする。これを見れば、MODSがスタイルに縛られた、ちょっとしたオシャレさん、みたいな先入観が間違いである事に気付くはずだ。『まるごとモッズがわかる本』みたいなカタログ本を読んで、そこに載ってる服や音楽ばっかり手に入れて、MOD道にいそしんでいる若年性MODSのみなさん、こういうのを見なさい。その写真を見て、なにをもってMODというのか考えるのだ。正しいアイデンティティーの形成は想像から。考える事がオリジナルを生むのだ。自らの力で、あるべき態度をクリエイトせよ。その過程にMODSへのヒントがあるはず。...なんて、自分ができてないのにカッコつけてみました。こんな感じで、うっかり意気がってしまうほど、テンションが上がる本です。
