笠井 寛司
1933年、京都生まれ。京都大学薬学科を経て、61年同大医学科を卒業。医学博士。69年日本バプテスト病院産婦人科に勤務した後、76年滋賀医科大学助教授。96年退職後、性科学者として活動、2002年2月2日、病没。90年、第10回日本性科学学会の学会長をつとめる。組織内分泌学の研究の傍ら、種々の観点から女性の性と性行動の実態調査を行い、女性外性器の統計学的形態分類に取り組むなど性問題の本質を追求している(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

正直言って、自分が産婦人科医になったような錯覚に陥り、貴重な体験とともにとても衝撃的な内容です。医学専門書ということもあり、解説は横文字だらけで極めて難解ですが、同著者の「名器の科学」という新書本では素人にもわかりやすく書かれているので、合わせて読むといいでしょう。おかげさまで、何となく未産婦と経産婦の区別がつくようになりました。性教育書としても役立ちます。本編の写真のほとんどは未産婦、巻末資料の白黒写真の大半は経産婦と思われます。本編では写真に年齢と身長と体重が記されており、巷で言われている通説が覆されるようなことも随所に書かれており、性の認識が全く変わりました。もうこのような本は今後出ないと思いますし、永久保存したい本の１冊になりました。

著者の笠井氏は、日本女性の性器の研究に生涯を捧げた婦人科医だが、本書は、著者が診察に於いて実際に遭遇した患者の性器に関する膨大な資料を分析・比較考察したもので質量ともに類書を圧倒している。
医療の現場に於いては、自分の性器の形状や色が異常ではないかと人知れず悩む女性に少なからず出会うが、そのような女性が本書を一読すれば、女性器は千差万別であり、自分のそれが異常でも何でもないことが容易に理解されるのではないだろうか。
将来的には、後継研究者によって日本女性以外の人種・民族に関する比較研究がなされることが期待されよう。

今回の増補改訂版も構成は同じだが初版が出産未経験者にほぼ限定されていたのに対し、改訂版では経産婦が加えられ資料が大幅に増加した。　正直言って最初にこの本を見た時は興奮したが慣れると特に猥褻さは感じられない。　女性器は隠されているからこそ興味を引くのであって、本書を読むと推理小説の結末を知ってしまったような感じになる。　一般に男性雑誌は視覚的に刺激的で文章は真面目な物が多く、女性雑誌はその逆が多いが、医学書である本書にもその傾向が見られるのは興味深い。
