元々好きなジャンルということもあり、一気に読んでしまいました。現在の高性能原子力潜水艦をモチーフにした物とは違う、ままならない歴史の重みのようなものを感じさせてくれます。何と言っても、フィクションでありながら、実話を元に綴られた小説だったことに驚かされました。当時の潜水艦に乗りたくはないけれども、憧れさせてくれます。

5.0 out of 5 stars 『アメリカの良心』というべき一冊, 2004/1/27
『女王陛下のユリシーズ号』『Ｕボート』『眼下の敵』……第二次世界大戦で潜水艦と水上艦の攻防を描いた作品には傑作が数多く、学生時代にほとんど読み尽くしたという自負があった。しかし、これほどの作品があったとは知らなかった。戦争の苛烈な現実、人間性の気高さと醜さを見事に描き出した点で、このジャンルの最高峰に入ると思う。

　あとがきによると、映画化までされた世界的ベストセラーらしい。それがなぜ、いままで日本で知られてこなかったのか。日本が敵役であることが理由の一つだろう。事実、日本人として思わず目を背けたくなる戦闘シーンもあった。しかし作者は、敵の優秀さと勇敢さに惜しみない賛辞を送っている。一歩まちがえば、立場は逆だったかもしれないと認めているのだ。

　正直、最近のアメリカ――というよりブッシュ政権――は利己的で傲慢だと思わざるを得ない。しかし、この本の主人公（あるいは作者）のように誠実なアメリカ人がまだいるとすれば、前途に少しは希望が持てる。同時にこの本から、もう一つ大事なことを教わった気がする。父や祖父の世代が命をかけて戦ってきたからこそ、いまの自分があるのだと。「アメリカの良心」ともいうべき一冊だろう。
