相対論を理解することは小学生のころからの夢であった。中学や高校のときにブルーバックスなんかをいろいろ買って読んだけど、数学を排した啓蒙書はどれを読んでも理解できない。この本読んでわかったんだけど、それもそのはず。相対論は数学だからだ。啓蒙書は数学を排してわけわかんなくするし、専門書は数学がむずかしそうに書いてあるし、物理的な意味がわかりにくかったりと、バランスの悪い本ばかりの中、本書はとてもバランスのとれた書き方がなされているように思う。

この本は微分・偏微分と線形代数の比較的初歩的な知識を知っていれば、一般相対論が
理解できるまでの知識を身につけさせてくれる本です。

この本には飛躍というものがありません。一節・一節懇切丁寧な解説が行われており、
特殊相対論や一般相対論に必要な数学と物理を、段階的にかつわかりやすい順序で
すこしずつ教えてくれます。最後まで読みきればそこには一般相対論のすばらしい
眺望が待っています。

この本の読み方のコツは、各節に付いている問題を丹念に解くことです。解答は
付いていませんが、節の解説を繰り返し読めば解けない問題はありません(非常に
手間のかかる問題はありますが)。時間はかかりますがそうすることで、リーマン幾何
にたいする立体的な理解が得られます。

一般相対性理論を理解したいならこの本 ** だけ ** で学べます。
必要な数学は全てこの本で、しかもとても楽に学べます。とにかくお勧めします。
