　世界的に有名な歴史通史シリーズの第一巻。本書では人類の誕生からオリエント世界を中心とした古代文明までが扱われる。豊富な写真と「現代に大きな影響を与えた事柄」を中心に書いていることから非常にシンプルに歴史を描き出していることが特徴。
　人類が徐々に文明を築き始めるまでの過程がダイナミックに生き生きと描き出されている。学校の勉強では単なる暗記の対象だったアウストラロピテクスやクロマニヨン人が頭の中で動き始めるのが実感できる本。歴史の面白さを再認識できる本。

　「多くの人に影響を与えた出来事を紡いだ物語で記述する」という著者の歴史思想に基づいて書かれた１０巻シリーズの一巻。この考え方は実に明快で、古代ギリシャの偉大な歴史家であったヘロドトスと同じでもある。
　この巻は、古代文明を取り扱っているが、長い先史時代がそれを準備したという考えに基づいている。考古学だけを専門とするのではなくて、現代までも記述する歴史家による、先史時代も含めた古代史の記述はロマンに満ちているだけではなく、近代科学を取り入れた歴史哲学としても面白い。

歴史書、得に世界史の本の傾向は、何から何まで載っていて、非常に細かい記述が多いものだが、本書の特色は著者であるJ･M･ロバーツ氏が冒頭に述べたように、『現在に影響を与えたであろう事柄を中心にとりあげた』だけあって、簡潔かつ体系的にまとめられている。過去の事象の年代表記が少ないのはやや不満だが、歴史の流れを最重要にしているであろう本書の特色を鑑みれば、それも払拭される。『です､ます』調の文体は平易で判り易く、時事問題を突発的なものと捉えがちな多くの方々に読んでもらいたい。歴史とは過去からの蓄積、継承であり､この大きな流れは変わらないと言う事がわかる。先のイラク戦争も、歴史の大きな流れに沿えば、避ける事の出来なかった人間の行為に思えてくる。
