脚本家であるラウラ・エスキヴェルの最初の小説です。メキシコでベストセラーになり、映画化され、映画もヒットしました。舞台はメキシコ革命時のメキシコとテキサス州の境のピエドラス・ネグラス周辺です。料理がたくさん出てきます。その料理が静物的な、物としての料理にとどまっていなくて、料理が「生きて」いて、「表現をしている」ように思えます。料理が言葉では伝えることが出来ない気持ちを表現する「３月　薔薇の花びらをあしらった鶉」や苦しみのない子供時代の思い出がよみがえる「１月　クリスマスのトルタ」など、おいしそうでとてもすてきです。

はじめてメキシコ人作家の本を読みましたが、ここまでロマンティックで叙情的だと思いませんでした。ときおりファンタジーのような描写があり、それも詩のようで引き込まれます。

料理描写が多いというので買った本ですが、期待以上の小説でした。映画もぜひ見てみたいと思います。

追記：映画も見ました。本を裏切らない出来でしたが本を読まずに映画をみたらちょっと？？？となるかも。
