私は竹を割ってカゴを編むこと（編組もの）をしていますが、この本はそういったカゴ編みをする方ばかりではなく竹そのものを使った細工物の紹介も多くしているので、これは竹の魅力を総合的に紹介している書籍であるとは言えます。
しかしこの書籍の７６頁から８０頁「伐採から保存まで基本加工マニュアル」に書かれている文章は、私のウェブサイトの内容を無断で使用したものです。出版元である誠文堂新光社が罪を認めホームページで謝罪しました。書籍をお求めになる前にご覧ください。

実際の作り方がとても少なく、これを見てまったくの初心者が
作品を作れるようになるとは思えないのが残念です。
とくに竹籠の作り方に興味のある方は他の本にあたった方がよいと思います。
ただ、趣味的な竹工芸の本はとても少ないので
竹を使った作品がたくさん載っていて
アイデアやイメージをふくらますことができる点は評価できます。
これを見て竹細工に興味を持ったら
紹介されている日本各地のギャラリーや教室、ショップをたずねて
作品に触れるなり、作り方を習うなりするといった入り口的な本のようです。

　「竹の種類選びから楽しめる「竹クラフト」完全教本」というタイトルに引かれてアマゾンで購入しました。しかし、この副題は内容と比較すると完全に名前負け、というよりも誇大表現です。がっかりしました。

　工作するのに参考になる作り方などの紹介も少しありました。でも、実際に工作の参考になる本をお探しならばお薦めしません。作品の種類と作り方の詳細という点で他にもっとよい本があります。この本では、全９５ページ中、作り方の紹介は５種類のみ、ページ数では６ページというボリュームです。

　ページの多くが作家の方々の作品紹介に割かれています。作品の解説も表面的ですので、竹細工のカタログと言ったところです。そう割り切って眺めれば楽しい本です。

　竹細工の基礎知識の記事は３０ページほど割いています。しかし、それぞれの記事の監修者がインターネットのサイトで紹介されている程度の内容でした。「完全教本」というにはあまりにもおそまつな内容だと思います。技術的なことを多く求めず、竹細工をカタログ的に楽しみたい方やインターネットで情報収集できない方にはお薦めの本です。
