著者アン ウィルソン シェフは本書において、アディクション (嗜癖) という現象が、その生育過程でたまたま機能不全に陥った個人が不幸にも担わされることになった病理に過ぎない、という見解の不完全さを指摘し、それがむしろ私たちが暮らす現代社会というシステムに半ば恣意的に組み込まれた巧妙な集合的プロセスであることを明晰に示してみせている。

さらに、私たちがそれを「告発」し、健全さを取り戻すには利口ぶった知的・論理的なアプローチではなく、「はらわたの感覚」によって自らを導く必要があることを訴える。そうした意味では、通常の心理学やセラピーの本とは少し異なる視点が感じられるだろう。

実際にシェフはその後、セラピストという立場からは身を引き、"Living In Process" と名付けられた、言わば Chogyam Trungpa の "SHAMBHALA Teachings" を思わせるような「日常生活と統合された覚醒への実践術」を説いている。

色々な意味で、とても刺激的な一冊である。

この本を初めて手に取った時から７年が経つ。初めて読んだ時は人生の底付だった。しかしこの本の中に印されていた「白人男性市場主義システム」という言葉の強烈なすり込みは私の中に蓄積された。脳味噌に印を付けられたと言った方が正しいかもしれない。それから自分の抱えて来たもの、自分の問題と向き合った結果今私は新たに世界の中の自分・社会の中の自分として、ちゃんと社会と関わろうとするとき、この言葉は酷く象徴的に聞こえるのは私の自意識過剰だろうか？この言葉が今の米国の動向を強く表してはいないだろうか？
ようやく回復して今此処に居る自分が出来る事を考えながら。再度読み直してみたくなる本だった。

以前から、この世の中の基本的ルールが勝ち負けに根ざした物で、勝ち負けにこだわっている限りは本質的な問題解決にならないと感じていた。いやこの本を読んだ後では「問題解決」という言い方もチープで本当はプロセスなんだと感じさせられる。そろそろ人間の本質は勝ち負けではないと言うことに気づいても良い時期に来ているのかもしれない。それが筆者の言うリビングプロセス社会なのかもしれない。数年前に気になって買って置いた本だけど、今読んでも、いやむしろ今のほうが説得力があるかもしれない。ただし筆者はフェミニストなので男性の私はちょっと責められてる感じもしてつらいときもありました。
