著者はもと毎日新聞政治記者にして、テレビでおなじみの政治評論家である。

昨今の内閣は小粒で寿命も短いことが多かった。
それゆえに政権を担当する者（あるいは政党、内閣）にはどんな能力が必要かを
あらためて解説する。

戦後の主要な内閣を分析することで見えてくる結論は妥当なところに行き着く。
冒頭にもあるが、清廉だが無能な政治家よりも悪人でも豪腕の政治家が必要ということだ。

田沼意次と松平定信のどちらがいいかというと議論になるかもしれない。
だが、政治家は有能な政治家と無能な政治家の２種類に分けられ、
クリーンなだけの政治家は必要ないというのが簡単な結論である。

その有能さの中身、具体的な部分は本書で確認されたい。

歴代内閣をピックアップしてあるので戦後の政治の流れもわかりやすく、
派閥時代とそれ以後との違いもあらためて実感できる内容である。

政党交付金や世襲の問題など非常に優しく解説されていてわかりやすくて良いのだが、それぞれの問題に関して、もう少し詳しく三宅さんの解説を読みたかった。
小沢一郎や鳩山由紀夫については本質に触れることなく、わずか二ページで終わってしまう。各々の事柄が単なる事実関係が中心に書いてあるため、すでにメディアで報じされていたり、他の大勢の論客が述べていることが多い。著者が三宅さんでなくても良いのではと思ってしまう。
帯に書いてある「著者が初めて語る迷走する日本政治への大提言」は言い過ぎ。
そこまで深い内容はない。

政治評論家として活躍されている三宅先生のファンなので過剰な期待を持って読んでしまい勝手に肩透かしを食らったような印象を受けましたが、基本的にこの手の本は教科書的にならざるをえないのでしょう。

日本の政治史を知るという意味では非常に優れた一冊ではないでしょうか。

なんにしろ高齢にもかかわらずあの清潔感には頭が下がります。
