作者は山名の由来を考察するには、音を聞けと説く。なぜなら、山の名前は漢字が大陸からもたらされる以前から使われていたものがあり、それに漢字を無理やりあてはめたからであるという。
　また、日本各地に似たような名前の山名が付いているのは、大同２年の山岳会というべきものが存在していたからだとも指摘する。

　××山を「××さん」「××やま」「××せん」などと異なって読むのも、それどれ山の名前を付けた当時の時代背景があったとのこと。
　山が無いのに××山と付く理由、山なのに××森が付く理由などなど多義に渡って解説している。

　なにしろ、本書は著者が実際に足で集めた資料もまじえて色々論じているので面白話題が多岐に渡って展開されている、それだけに逆に内容の詳細な掘りさげがやや浅いとも感じるが、そこは読者の自由研究で補完すべきであろう（夏休みの自由研究の題材に良いかも知れない）。

　本書は山屋さんの幕営中の酒のつまみ話しにも向いているし、砂金取りを趣味にしている方にも参考になるかもしれない。
　なお、巻末に索引が付いているのがうれしい。

山へ登る人は山の持っている歴史や名前について考えずにはいられない。それを知ることによって山行の興味も楽しみも倍加する。ところがほとんどの場合得られる答えは推理、推測の域を出ない。本書はそのバリアーを突き破って、あやふやな民間伝承とは異なった山の歴史を考えさせてくれる。どうやら山の歴史はわれわれが想像しているよりもはるかに古くまで遡れる。そしてわれわれの祖先と山との関係は信仰ばかりでなく、鉱山としての山に深い関わりがあったことが知られる。そもそも信仰と鉱山とは切り離し難いものだったに違いない。

金、銀、銅を掘る山の歴史は教科書で学ぶ歴史よりもはるかに古い歴史を持っていそうだ。その意味で本書は登山の愛好家ばかりでなく、表題にもあるように日本の歴史に関心をもつ人たちにも有益だと思われる。日本古代史で果たした朝鮮半島からの渡来人の役割の深さも印象づけられる。

著者の幅広い知識と関心には驚くべきものがある。ただあえて注文を出すとすれば、扱われている話題が多岐にわたっているせいか、個々の論点の説明が必ずしも十分とはいえない。巻末にある「山の名前でひけるさくいん」はこれから山に行こうという人が、とりあえずの予備知識を得るのに有用である。思いのほかに多くの山名がそこにある。
