　人間にとっては、実際に起こった事実も、起こらなかったこと（夢、錯覚、思い込み、等々）も、ともに「真実」として「わたし」の記憶のなかに、ないまぜになって生きつづけていると考えるのが自然であると思います。そうしたことを踏まえますと、ここで論じられている「記憶」をキーワードとする論集は、人間という存在の「真実」のありようを、「民俗学」という体裁をとって論じているだけのことに過ぎないのではないでしょうか。論集のなかに、伝説を例にとり、個人の解釈・再解釈などを場所に結びつけて論じているものもありますが、これは人間という存在の日々の精神活動にあまりにも無自覚的な論考であるように思います。民俗学と記憶というからには、集合表象への誘いを。

小松和彦氏の｢『たましい』という名の記憶装置」が全体の理論的バックボーンとなっているが、この論文は加筆されて『神なき時代の民俗学』に収録されている。小松氏の議論を中心とした民俗学のこれ以後の展開に興味がある方は、そちらも参照したほうがよいと思われる。

本論は、民俗学、人類学、人文地理学などのフィールド資料をもとに、日本の地域に現存する「固有」の記憶を捕捉するする試みであり、そして、その試みは、ほぼ完全に破綻している。そもそも、本書が採用した「民俗社会」という概念に賛同する研究者自体が、すでに記憶されるべき存在である。この論集は、もはやこの国のどこを捜しても、「固有さ」など存在しないという事実を隠蔽し、落日の後の日本民俗学の無意味な延命にのみ寄与していると言える。
