男女の性意識が、主に先天的なものによるのか、主に後天的なものによるのか、という点に関して、ジョン・マネーは、前者学説のもっとも有名な主張者の一人である。
実際、６０年代から著者の理論を背景にした様々な手術が特にアメリカ内で行なわれてきた。
そして、その理論を立証する上で、きわめて重要な役割を果たしていたのが、同書中に出てくる、生後まもなく男性器にキズをうけた男の赤ん坊を女として育てて、みごと成功したという事例である。
ところが、９０年代半ば、その成功例として著者の理論を支えていた上記の事例が、成長した手術対象その人の発言などにより、大ウソであることが明らかになった。そのことを扱ったノンフィクションが「ブレンダと呼ばれた少年」（コラピント）である。したがって、現在、本書を読むには、絶対に「ブレンダ~」を併読する必要がある。

　　作者ジョンマネーとは「性同一性障害」及び、「性転換」手術における世界の第一人者。「ブレンダと呼ばれた少年」のブレンダを作り出した医師でもあるその本人の著書。２０年以上前の出版本で、入手まで苦労した。アダムとイブの創世記から染色体による男女の決定までの過程。性別の決定とは身体的のみによるか、精神的なものによるかなど、始めに一般の読者にわかりやすく解説とあるが、やはりかなり専門的に詳しく書かれているのですぐには読めない。でも「性同一性障害」について詳しく学ぶためにははずすことのできない一冊であろう。
