元大物国会議員・大堂。
彼の事務所で働く事務員・聖は、まだ21歳の大学生ながら
持ち前の機転と経験で、目をかけられている。
そんな聖が、大堂のもとに持ち込まれる
不思議な出来事を解決していく連作短編集。

まずは開会「政治家事務所の一日」で、政治家事務所の仕事や
事務員の立場、聖の人物紹介をざっとなされます。
その後、時計の針を戻して、事件のお話。

飼い猫の色が変わる「五色の猫」、
幽霊屋敷で頭を殴られた後援会幹部の事件の始末「白い背広」
寄付された絵を持って新興宗教に入信した秘書の始末「月下の青」
夫のダイエットに励む妻と太っていく夫の謎「商店街の赤信号」
インターンで来た大学生の隠し子疑惑と、
聖の父や弟の謎がからむ「親父とオヤジとピンクの便箋」

ジャンルでいえば日常の謎ものです。
この種の謎は、殺人などの重犯罪と異なり、
事件の真相がイコール解決ではなく、
関係者が満足することが解決に値すると思いますが
政治家の仕事と類似点が多く、うまくからめられていました。

大堂のことを「オヤジ」とよび、ぽんぽんとものをいう聖ですが
海千山千の世界を勝ち抜いてきた大堂は一筋縄でいく相手ではなく
そういう大堂だからこそ、聖ものびのびと才覚をふるえるのです。
大堂の弟子で「王子様」とよばれる加納や、
美人で健啖家の秘書・真木など、魅力的な脇役もいっぱいです。

　2006年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　政治家事務所を舞台にしたミステリである。５篇が収められている。
　有権者から持ち込まれた「謎」を解かされたり、選挙にまつわるごたごたに巻き込まれたり、大物政治家の「隠し子」騒動が勃発したりと、政治がらみの事件ばかりだ。あまりミステリでは見かけない材料だけに、なかなか面白い一冊であった。
　ただ、読み終わって思うのは、「やはり政治家は汚いなあ」ということ。なんだかスッキリしない。また、謎自体がいまいちで、ガッカリ（これは畠中作品では良くあることだが）。
