表題作「いのちのパレード」を含む全１５編の短編集。

恩田陸としては５冊目の短編であるが、今回は前作までとは明らかに毛色が違う。
ファンタジー、ＳＦ、ミステリ、ホラーと色とりどりの数々のジャンルを網羅しているのは前作までと同様。恩田陸らしさも同様。

しかし、後書きで本人が「無国籍で不思議な短編集を作りたい」と語る通り、一見無作為に見えて、上記のような明確なテーマと、海外の大作家たちの「異色作家短編集」へのオマージュという明確な意思を持って繰り広げられる作品群は圧巻。

評価の分かれる作品（特にもう一つの表題作に用意されていた「スペインの苔」は強烈。彼女の容赦のなさを垣間見られる珍しい作品）だとは思うが、私は恩田陸の短編集では最高の出来だと思う。前作までと異なり、他作品とリンクも一切無く、そこにも今までとは違う明確な意思を感じる。

個人的には「図書館の海」の「オデュッセイア」に似た「走り続けよ、ひとすじの煙となるまで」や、近年の彼女らしい演劇調「エンドマークまでご一緒に」がおススメ。

また、内容・テーマに呼応したかのような不思議な表紙、タイトルの洋訳、珍しいページ表記と作品群以外も素晴らしい出来です。

１５篇の異様極まりない作品集。
どの作品にも「異様」という言葉に加えて「突飛」という言葉すら当てはまる。
それは、読者の予想が大きく裏切られるという、読み手側にとっての楽しみが大きいという意味だ。

例えば、前の方に配置されている「スペインの苔」では、少女とロボットのオモチャとの関係の解説は、十分に分かる。
ところが、ロボットのオモチャとスペインの苔との関係は、、、！！！？？？
いったんは、我が眼を疑ったが、とにかく突飛なのだ。

全作品が、こんな調子であって、ファンタジーとは、趣が異なる。

それでは、これらの作品群は何なのか？
著者の数々の長編推理小説には、度々、展開の予想を大きく裏切られて、悔しい思いをするが、それが楽しみでもある。
同様に、本書では、物語の流れの中で、予想する数ページ先には、まるで想像も出来なかった事が書かれている。
つまり、常人が通常、考えもしない様な事が描かれているのだ。

異様かつ突飛なのだが、決して悪い意味ではない。
ページをめくると、１０分間隔で脳がしびれる、刺激的な作品群だ。

■早川書房のドル箱叢書《異色作家短篇集》（18巻、1959‐1963年）は、リチャード・マシスンやロバート・シェクリィやジョン・コリアなどの幻想怪奇風味溢れた極上短篇がぎっしり詰まり、読書家に愛された。70年代に新装再刊、近年全20巻の構成で三度復刊されるなど根強い人気を誇る。恩田陸は同叢書を深く愛好、強い影響を受けたという。本書は恩田が、同叢書にオマージュを捧げて編んだ《恩田版異色作家短篇集》。15作が収録されている。

■幾つか小説の実験が展開されている。例えば「エンドマークまでご一緒に」は、まるでファンタジー・ミュージカル映画の台本のような構成で若い男女のロマンスが描かれ、ライオンまでもが歌を歌う。また「蛇と虹」は姉妹の対話形式で物語が構成されている。

■どの作品も謎と幻想に満ちている。「かたつむり注意報」は伝記作家が異国の田舎の宿でかたつむりの大群に遭遇する怪奇譚。「夜想曲」は、創作の源泉あるいは〈物語の神〉のような存在がアンドロイドに憑依し超生命体として進化させる奇想ＳＦだ。そして表題作「いのちのパレード」では、地球上の死に絶えた生き物が延々と行進を続ける。行進の観察者も既に死者であることを暗示させ、書評子はロッド・サーリングの傑作ＴＶシリーズ「ミステリー・ゾーン」なども思い浮かべた。
