主人公のカドルトは「鎖の国」の官吏である「鎖衣」。
「鎖衣」とは名のとおり鎖を身につけた人々で、鎖の国では神への信仰の代わりに法が信仰され、その信仰の証が鎖なのです。
鎖のまとい方はそれぞれですが、なんとカドルトは「自死という罪を犯さないために（自殺衝動を抑えるために）」首と両手に鎖を巻きつけております。何てこった！
収録作品では「水の花」がおすすめです。大河の神を信じる水の国の巫女との価値観の違いが、現実世界での文化や思想の幅広さを思わせます。

”己の信念のままに己が身を鎖で縛り上げ　世をがんじがらめにしている鎖を読み解き人々に示す…そんな一生を生きますか？
鎖衣だけがすべての苦しみと罪の鎖に対し公平な存在なのです――”

大学で幅広く思想史、宗教学、哲学を学んだという作者の引き出しはすごいです。
その反面、漫画としては若干ネームが粗く人物の心理描写が物足りなく、シリアスなシーンとコミカルなシーンのバランスが取れていない感もあります。
ですが買って良かったと思うので★4つ。

神は存在せず、鎖が信仰の証となる独特の世界を、たった１話で語ってしまう技量は大したものだ。絵柄の雰囲気と相まって、美しい物語に仕上がっている。個人的にはとても好きだ。ただ、あまりにも救いがない。ここまで現代社会を反映させなくてもいいのではないか。対象年齢をどの辺に設定しているのか定かではないが、もう少し希望のある終わり方がなかったのかとも思う。

連鎖する鎖よ　この世は悲しい
このカドルトをどうか繋ぎとめたまえ──
その身に鎖を纏い、カドルトは祈る。
ともすれば、死にたくなってしまう心を抑え、人々の
ために。だが、敵国の女王に恋したスイズル卿や、水の国の巫女、
そして何より常にそばに寄り添う鎖騎士ラダンの存在が、
少しずつ彼を変えていく……！？
胸を打つ、トリコ風ファンタジー・ワールド（以上、裏表紙作品解説より）
身分違い、民族・文化・宗教の違いがさりげなく物語りに見事組み込まれている。
鎖衣（さい）という言葉の役職と、その独特な役割と思想を作品の中で作り出している。
鎖というモチーフが面白いし、騎士ラダンとの物語や、鎖衣（さい）の世界について
もっと読んでみたいと思う作品。
