この本の著者ＴＯＮＯさんは私の大好きな漫画家の一人だ。私は彼女の漫画で時々本当に胸に染み入る気持ちになる。彼女が描く虚構のストーリーの中に真実が含まれているからだ。

このラビット・ハンティングに出てくる「狩られること、ひいては見られることへの恐怖」も、他社出版チキタ★ＧＵＧＵに出てくる「身近な死への恐怖と悲しみ」も、著者ご本人が確実に体験してきていたのであろう真実味がある。その真実味の上にかぶさったポップなテンポや言い回しがオブラートのように痛みを包んでいる。痛みが自己陶酔的な痛みとして描かれていないこのやわらかさが、独特の雰囲気が、本当の痛みを逆に如実に感じさせるが、それがけして不快なものにはならない。どんなに幼くても幼いなりの強さで生きていく子供たちを描ける数少ない漫画家だろうと思う。

子供は弱くて脆いが、その弱さの下に立ち上がる強さを持っている。そんな希望を見せてくれる漫画でもある。ＴＯＮＯさんの手腕にはいつも脱帽する思いである。ちなみにＴＯＮＯさん著のカルバニア物語を友人に貸したところ、「友人の友人」や「友人の友人の近所の奥さん方」にまでヒットしているようだ。「面白くない」という批評を聞かない。

どのシリーズも次作が楽しみである。

は簡単だ。大きな音をたてて、兎が立ちすくんだところを捕まえればいい。だから狩られないウサギになるためには、何が起きても驚かず、脅えず、立ちすくまず、ただひたすら雪の上を駆けて行くしかない……。
この話の主要登場人物である子供たち3人は、皆狩られるウサギである。狩られることは戸惑いと恐怖であり、怒りにすらなりえない。母が狩られることには怒りを感じるクロムさえ、自身が狩られたことは「早く忘れたい」と呟くだけ。
彼らの恐怖、そして罠にかかった傷の痛みを、情け容赦なくTONOさんは描いていく。コワイ、イタイ、ツライ話。それでもTONOさんの筆致はあくまでも軽く自然で、子供たち3人は彼らなりに強く、明るさを失わない。
1冊で終わる予定だったという本作。どうか次巻(以降)で、チャイナ・ジョンジョン・クロム、みんなが安全な巣穴に、そして素敵な恋愛にたどり着けますように。
# ちなみに My favorite character は、ベリンダちゃんです。
